UCL requires STEP for 2013 entry.
    Entry requirements:
A*A*A, or A*AA and a 1 in any STEP paper or distinction in Mathematics AEA

Seems like Kings may also require STEP for 2014 entry for Mathematics.

Im more shocked by the fact of how much they now want from Scottish students! Hell Its now easier to get into the COWI universities; UCL are thinking way too much of themselfs. More on why they have done it, Id assume its more to do with that they probably get lots of COWI applicants insuring them so alot of the "best" candidates don't end up at UCL and they have to settle for less in their opinion...probably.

Not surprising IMO. Most people who apply to UCL also apply to either Oxford or Cambridge and Imperial, and merely want to use UCL as an insurance offer. Whacking a STEP requirement is going to stop this, to an extent, as neither Oxford nor Imperial (I think?) require it. I think it's perhaps also to create something of a placebo effect, whereby people see it has a STEP entry requirement and so just assume it must be better than most other similar courses elsewhere (say Warwick, which only requires the AEA, for example).

I'm not following you there - UCL are accepting AEA instead of STEP and they still have an alternative offer that doesn't include either of those exams. But Warwick include step/AEA in all their standard a-level offers.

My bad, perhaps Warwick was a bad example. I still think it's a valid point though, no different to people expecting more from an A*AA course than an AAB course.

Will it must mean, that there are quite a few applicants to Maths at UCL who are placing it as their firm.

Hence, to obtain the best applicants, the grade requirements has been raised/STEP or AEA is required.

I think the reason for this is as its in London. Math applicants who want to pursue pure Maths in London will have the top 3 choices of Imperial, UCL and Kings. Hence, UCL will be a target for many.

yeah i saw it on their page. its a travesty really, the mathematics course is around the same difficultly as the kings mathematics course. they've inflated their offer to attract unsuspecting clever mathematics students. its a good uni and course, but the entry standards are too high IMO.

well people will put kings as a back-up because they dont require STEP. hence an overload of applicants, hence they will struggle to keep numbers down for 2013 entry, hence for 2014 entry they may need to raise entry standards to include STEP/AEA to bring the numbers down.

Bit up themselves for a maths department which is just a few floors plonked on top of the student union.
