Mac becoming sluggish after 1 year. Any suggested anti-spyware / cleanup programs?
    Hi all,

    Just after some advice.

Had my macbook pro for just over a year and up to now it's been great - no lag (unlike pc's). However recently safari has been freezing if I leave the laptop and screen saver comes on and sometimes I feel that the laptop is a little slower than it used to be. I don't have a massive amount on its internal hard drive as I try to keep everything on my external 1TB hard drive.

Are there any decent / free programs which would remove any spyware / viruses (I know macs tend not to have many compared to PCs but still). Also is there anything else I could do? Such as the equivalent of the old 'defrag' function on PCs.

    Thanks.

There's one called mac keeper, but I dont think this is free.

Also have a look at Sophos antivirus and iantivirus.

Don't mind paying if it's good (and doesn't cost 2348 £). Have you tried any of them?

You could give OnyX a go, it's free and has a few "cleaning" and verification utilities.

    Try running CCleaner , http://www.piriform.com/mac/ccleaner

It got rid of about 1.4GB of crap on my one, and deletes old files that you no longer need.

Great article with a bunch of good anti-virus programmes for macs—however they're not free.

    Alternative you could get ClamXav
    http://www.clamxav.com/

    Or Sophos

Deleting all your files on Safari should help to speed the internet up. I have an app called CCleaner, which I think will do that if you get it to do a general clean. That should help to speed your mac up. Also, make sure you don't have a load of stuff set to fire up when you start your mac up.

Go into Settings> Users & Groups> Login Items

Make sure the list is empty. This speeds up start up Restart a couple of times after deleting all the excess files and you *should* notice a difference!

Best way to speed things up is to do a completely fresh install of OSX.

Bit of a hassle and you'll need something to wack your files and music on but it's the best way to get things smooth again.

Try Onyx or CCleaner. I prefer Onyx myself.

CCleaner is very good, fixes up registry, also update the drivers on everything as well
