Do you dress up for 'informal chat'?
Right, I'm heading to my local AFCO tomorrow for an 'informal chat' about joining the RAF as an aerospace battle manager or logistics officer (completely different roles I know, but been advised to also be interested in an officer role which isn't aptitude based... but ABM is definitely my top choice!)

    Anyway...

I know it's just an 'informal chat', but is it worth dressing up for it or not? E.g. Full suit? Jeans and shirt? Smart trousers and shirt? Anything I want?

    Thanks!

Dress smart. For the love of God don't wear jeans. It's always best to be over-dressed than under-dressed. Make a good impression. Good luck

You're just walking into your AFCO and asking questions and info and stuff?

If so, then dressing smart does not matter in the slightest. I wore joggers and a Casual T-Shirt when i went in, then turned up to my Aptitude test in the full suit. The first impression will be the aptitude test/interview, not an informal chat for some information. Wear what you are going to be comfortable in.

You're going to be presenting yourself as a potential officer. Informal it may be, but go smart. ALWAYS go smart! And as has already been said, never jeans.

Danny, first impressions are exactly that. You never know, he COULD be met by the officer who will end up doing the presentation and interview. You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.

    Cheers for the replies.

So smart dress is the correct choice, but how smart do I go? Don't want to go suited and booted if that's not the norm, but again don't want to be smart-casual if being fully suited is the norm...

    1. Full suit (incl. tie etc.)
    2. Suit trousers and shirt (as above, but no tie and no jacket)
    3. Smart trousers and shirt (smart non-suit trousers, with no tie)

Apologies for possibly over-thinking all this, I know it's just the 'informal chat' but I really really want to make it in!

^I agree. 3 sounds like the perfect balance

I would say any of the above would be perfectly acceptable so whichever you feel most comfortable in.

I say option three, a full suit might seem a bit too much but option three is smart enough to be respectful and make a good impression while still keeping it informal.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone.

Smart trousers and a shirt it is then

Slightly off-topic, but I take it for the proper interview (if I don't get put off by the chat today!) I would wear a full suit?

Just wear something comfortable and slightly smarter than casual, doesn't need to be fancy like a full blown suit just something more than day-to-day wear.

Don't go overboard, a suit or a tie is too much.
Jeans are probably best avoided and a shirt is a must.
    Smart shoes, no trainers.

Smart-casual is what you're going for, and good luck

Is this just you going in and registering interest in a role?

If so I just rocked up in my normal attire, it didn't affect my application in the slightest.

Craglyboy, it may not have affected YOUR application, but the op is advised to present himself as the potential officer he is, not someone just walking in on a whim. Having dealt with P2 applicants for almost 4 years, I know what is looked for.
