Freshers - Getting Involved with SocFed =D
Welcome to Loughborough University: where prospective and current students can discuss everything from being a drinking university with a sporting problem to why everyone wears flip flops in winter.

Freshers - Getting Involved with SocFed =D
I'm sure all the soon-to-be freshers are properly hyped about starting at Loughborough =D
Soo I thought I'd put in a word for Student Union Societies and basically how awesome they. Brilliant way to get involved with the student experience - meet new people, try new stuff and generally have fun - usually at epic price discounts.
There's masses of societies in a tonne of different areas. The freshers bazaar will be your one stop shop to find out what you want to know.
Also watch out for societies that have a limited capacity (Pole Dance Soc as one example) - you'll want to sign up to these ASAP (probably before the bazaar to really ensure your spot).
To join a soc its £5 insurance + cost of societies. (you only pay insurance once).
I thought it'd be nice for people to post about any societies they are in (will add to OP =D) or if any freshers have any questions they could put them here =D
LSU Computer Society
Interests - Computers, Gaming, Steak, Kittens, Reddit
Socials - Weekly "steak nights" at Amber Rooms. Occasional "Console nights" at the union. A group normally go to stupid tuesday and Mosh in Leicester on a Friday.
Other events - Twice termly large LAN parties on campus. Bletchley Park vists. Other uni and pro LAN parties. Lazerquest. Educational and interest talks.
Other Benefits - Active forums and online gaming community (including hosting our own servers).
Cost - £15 membership (gets you free entry to first LAN) + insurance
Member Restrictions - None, but LAN parties do sell out so it's best to secure tickets (£5 refundable deposit for the first one) before the event, to ensure your space
Random Blurb - Really friendly society, and a lot more about socialising than people would think. We're pretty active over the summer virtually - so if you play online games and would like to meet some awesome current students then visit lsucs.org.uk for more details =D
Belly Dance Soc
Socials - Everything from nights out to Nottingham to pre drinks in the Bill Mo common room in preparation for Stupid Tuesday! Tuesday sessions are the more ''formal'' ones with the instructor, and the second is quite relaxed, where we'll probably spend the second half socialising; maybe get a take out or potentially end up in Revs!
Other Benefits - Learn to get your windy grindy hips ready for those nights out!
Cost - At the moment it's £30 for one semester which includes a coin belt and stick or £50 all year.
Random Blurb - The new committee has been voted in and we've been working hard to revamp the committee for Freshers! We're second years and you'll see us on nights out during Freshers dressed as belly dancers to entice you all in! It's great fun and we have a professional instructor who's performed with world class dancers!
Breakdance society
Interests - Street dance, hip hop, cyphers, dance, routines
Socials - New social sec will be organising a calender of socials which will be handed out at the bazaar, as well as there being opportunities for various performances
Other events - UK uni bboy championships (newcastle), hardskool (students union)
Other Benefits - Being able to bust-a-move whenever you want
Cost - £45 membership for the year which gives weekly training with our coach + a society t-shirt
Random Blurb - The breaking community is quite chilled out, many people may be afraid to try it out because they've never danced before, but most members started this year and have gotten really far, sessions are quite relaxed and there are the older members who are there to help anyone who wants to learn new moves~
Hiking club
Interests - Walking, hiking, scrambling, mountaineering
Socials - Weekly Thursday Pub Club, perfect for those who prefer a quieter evening down the pub than clubbing, although we do that too!
Other events - Alton Towers, Laser Quest, etc.
Cost - £25 for the yearLast edited by Diminutive; 10-10-2012 at 10:56. -

Could you add that our Tuesday session is the more ''formal'' one with the instructor, and the second is quite relaxed, where we'll probably spend the second half socialising; maybe get a take out or potentially end up in Revs! -

Re: Freshers - Getting Involved with SocFed =D
Definitely get yourself down to the bazaar even if your flatmates aren't and don't be put off if your flatmates aren't joining but you want to join either, it's good to do things that your flatmates don't so you widen your friendship circles and have other things going on in your life, plus it's great for your CV!
I didn't join any societies in freshers and ended up joining half way through term (well, I put my name down for a few but they got cancelled, and I was on the waiting list for Pole Dance in 2010 but I don't even think they have a waiting list anymore it's that busy so make sure you join before you go to the bazaar if you want to guarantee a place!) but I really wish I'd joined from the beginning (not because I didn't feel welcome but because I knew i'dve had an even better first term of uni).
Being part of my society here at Loughborough has been such an experience, given me great friendships and memories that I will keep forever (as cringy as that sounds!). I'm actually quite gutted about doing a placement this year in that it means I won't get to be in my society.
One thing to mention is that if you don't sign up in freshers bazaar definitely do not think that this means you've "missed the boat" with all the societies as there are many that will gladly accept you half way through the year. Some of the people on the committee in my society joined half way and just blended in immediately.

What games get played at LAN parties? I've always thought about joining LSUCS but always assumed that no one would play any games I play.
The main tournament games are TF2, starcraft 2, Supreme Commander, L4D2, Minecraft and Portal 2. We've also got quite a few members who play LoL, Dota2 and HoN. Then there's a whole array of other games that get played across the LANs by member just ad-hoc.... like Civ 4, NS2... those street fighter games that I don't know what they are haha, and loads of other stuff. People just post on our forums and get a LAN game going that way =) I'm sure there'll be at least a couple of people who share your gaming interests. Plus, extra girls are always very welcome. -
Re: Freshers - Getting Involved with SocFed =D
These aren't societies but there's good opportunities for subsidised music tuition through the University. It's always so poorly advertised that some students aren't aware of it until their final year (if at all).
From the website:
"Loughborough University Arts provides subsidised music tuition offered to students selected via open auditions. Those selected receive thirty minutes' tuition per week for twenty weeks. The cost of this would be £250, but via the scheme, students only pay a £55 registration fee.
Tuition is offered in singing, piano, guitar, violin, flute, brass, clarinet, cello and saxophone. It is expected that students who benefit from the scheme will take an active part in the musical life of the University, by joining groups such as the orchestra, choir or concert band. Because of the high demand for places, we do not cater for beginners.
There's also language tuition out of University hours that's pretty good, though some students get to take very basic tuition as an optional module in some subjects. Link -

Anyone involved in the LSU Motorcycle Club? Or know of it well? I want to bring my bike to Loughborough, and with little tools or workspace at home I've rarely been able to spend time with a Haynes manual maintaining or servicing it - something I'd like to be able to do at uni. The website on lufbra.net seems to be outdated.

Re: Freshers - Getting Involved with SocFed =DI tried emailing them a couple of months back but got no response(Original post by Moleymann)

I'll be tracking them down when I arrive at Loughborough next week though, as I'm bringing my bike with me
. What bike do you have by the way?

Hiking Club
Hey, I am currently running for Publicity Secretary of the hiking club and thought i'd try and encourage as many new people to join as possible.
Let's face it, usually weekends at Uni can be fairly dull. But it doesn't have to be that way! The hiking club travels to many different destinations throughout the year, including Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons.
We also have various socials, including an Alton Towers trip and Laser Quest, along with a weekly Thursday Pub Club, perfect for those we prefer a quieter evening down the pub than clubbing, although we do that too!
Our first trip is planned for the 14th October and the first social is on the 11th October. So if you are looking to meet some great people, whatever year you are in, then definitely look into joining:http://www.lsuhc.org.uk/
Feel free to post/message me any questions you may have

Would be nice if this thread had a few more societies listed
Edit: Realised after I posted it that it's an incredibly short blurb compared to the others

If I was feeling extra keen I could do blurbs for ALL the societies
But I'm not going to
I like how the list in your post has inadvertently ended up being in alphabetical order apart from CompSoc at the top

Given that the entire post was a thinly veiled attempt to advertise compsoc while not spamming and catering for everyone, I think the current chronological order is fine =p
In other news, compsoc had an amazing first social. Over 70 people taking over JCs and member count is now at over 100 =D All set for our Console Night tomorrow at 8pm in the village bar
