Tesco Trainee Management Programme 2012/13
Who is going to apply for the scheme this year?
Who knows how long it takes before Tesco's formally offer you employment after the scheme closes?
How does the online assessment compare to M & S management scheme online assessments? I'm pretty sure they both use SHL?
I'm going to apply this year. I applied last year, but didn't pass the online assessments. -
Re: Tesco Trainee Management Programme 2012/13
Been on the reserve list all summer, never dreamed of getting a call, but due to somebody dropping out I've been offered a place. Start on 10th September. Any one else on here successful?
Santorum - starting salary is about £17000 then I believe it increases once you qualify -
Re: Tesco Trainee Management Programme 2012/13I applied this year, after initial online application, you get invited to complete online testing through SHL. If successful then you get a telephone interview. Next stage after that is a store visit, where you get to live a "day in the life of a manager." Once you've completed that there's then a one day assessment centre which comprises a formal interview, a group discussion and an individual presentation then finally a Q&A session.(Original post by Choo.choo)

Re: Tesco Trainee Management Programme 2012/13
Hi everyone doing this-
I went for it last year and got through to the final interviewing stages! .. but then got rejected.
Just so you know its a long long process and you won't be starting until next September! So dont panic if it takes ages for them to get back to you.
Just a few tips for the final stage - when I did it, it was 4 sections - 1) A personal presentation about something which was in a case study booklet (usually about what product to take on, etc etc). 2) An interview saying why you want to do it, etc 3) A written exam (mine was about choosing a location for a new store and why I chose it) 4) The group discussion (this is where I messed up)
They mark you on all 4 sections - from Very Good to Very Poor - I got Very Good in the first three and then Very Poor in the last one.
I can't really advise on the exam and presentation so here are tips for the interview:
- MAKE SURE you make yourself out to be approachable, understanding and caring - they want you to be really efficient but the main thing about retail is that you need to be a good people-person, for the customers and also because you'll be managing people everyday.
Now, for the group discussion:
- i argued and argued for my point in the group discussion, not because I wanted to look better, but because I thought I was right - this is the WRONG thing to do, obviously you should show you have a good and well thought out opinion, but do not try and force other people into your way of thinking (I always have and probably always will do this).
- You need to show you are willing to compromise (hate that word) and listen to other peoples point of view.
- When someone else makes a 'good' point, make sure you acknowledge it e.g. "Oh now thats a good idea, I agree with that"
- When listening to other people, make sure you look at them and make sure you engage with what they are saying (my feedback was that when I didnt win the point, I just looked at the table and didnt listen to other people)
I can't stress enough how important it is to show that you are diplomatic and tactful in what you do! They want efficient/intelligent people obviously, but they can teach you all about the Tesco systems if they take you on, what they want is a good people person with good common sense. The typical 'leadership' ideas of being dominant, etc are not what they want.
BUT, make sure you get your point across - there were a few people who were way to timid in the group discussion and they didnt get it either - you need to make your point, listen to others, form a compromise and praise good suggestions.
GOOD LUCK! -
Re: Tesco Trainee Management Programme 2012/13
Thanks for the advice jdh1993!!
Hope everyones phone interviews went well, i had mine on the 29th october and found out yesterday im through to the next stage!!! the work sample.
They contacted me by email saying that they will be in touch in the new year to provide me with a date for a work sample in either January or February.
Anyone else found out if they are through? Anybody know if we are assessed on the work sample? Iv heard different things from these forums, some saying it is assessed some saying it isn't. -
Re: Tesco Trainee Management Programme 2012/13
Hello guys.
Im new at the student room so I'm sorry if mistakes are made
I'm through to the day in a store part and really excited to progress!
I have a degree, but didn't apply for the grad scheme. My question is this: does anyone else who applied for the trainee management scheme have a degree? And if so did this work against you?
The grad scheme is two years long which I didn't want (the quicker the better for me). I have a2:1 law degree so could have done it if I wanted to but chose the alevel scheme.
Many thanks and good luck

Re: Tesco Trainee Management Programme 2012/13

Where are people from in the country? Im from Burnley - North west. -
Re: Tesco Trainee Management Programme 2012/13
I can't find a thread about the graduate scheme, so am going to assume I can ask my question here.
I've applied for the distribution graduate scheme with Tesco's, and have got my telephone interview on Friday.
I've looked online and can't find too much information on it.
How can I prepare, what questions will come up?
Really appreciate any answers, thanks. -
Re: Tesco Trainee Management Programme 2012/13Thank you so much for this! I've got my telephone interview on Wednesday, so nervous. Will be doing preparation tomorrow night for it(Original post by katiej_xx)
You seriously need to research the company, I had six pages worth of notes, questions came up such as can you tell me about any of tescos business models and any new ventures for the business, i mentioned the academy they opened in Asia in 2011, they ask lots of questions about what you know about tesco and what you know about the role your applying for, for the trainee manager they asked me what is the difference between a line and store manager, how I would go out of my way to help customers, what different customer service I would bring to help tesco, its 5 greatest achievements as a company, i talked about the tesco values which you can find on the website which would be good to bring up, i mentioned the companys core value(mission statement) just do alot of research on the company. They have alot of key words on the recruitment page of what they want from staff, so it would be good to throw a few of them in too.
Hope this helps :-)
Great to hear other people going through the same situation. Best of luck to everyone x
