Criticised for being a gamer?
I'm definitely a gamer, I spend quite a lot of my time gaming. I don't consider myself an extremely 'stereotypical' gamer (in the minds of the people I'm talking about) though because I also have a very active social life with my friends. I mean I'm in Glasgow for heaven's sake :P a lot of the people I spend time with/go on nights out with aren't gamers at all and I often get criticised ... I don't know many gamers at all 'IRL' because of this.
I have a twitter account which I often post about games on just because I can connect with other gamers on there and all of my friends aren't gamers as I mentioned. Once again though a lot of the friends I mentioned before have twitter too and just today I tweeted about being excited that the GW2 release date had been announced. I actually used to be quite embarrassed that I was a gamer because of how people I knew thought of gamers but then I thought why should I be embarrassed? It's just a normal activity like everything else...
One of them tweeted to me that it was 'definitely the gayest tweet you've ever written' and called me a 'loser' for being a gamer and that it was a total time waster - I know this isn't what a true friend would do but I never considered her a friend anyway for a number of reasons so I'm not particularly bothered about that in particular. But she has been very critical of how I like gaming in the past. I argued my case and said that it is no different to watching TV and that her opinions don't have to be shared by everyone, of course she had no reply...
Just wondering if you guys ever face criticism for being a gamer and how you defend yourself, I just don't think the criticism is justified and why should I have to defend myself in the first place? It's just an activity like everything else that I (and others) do to fill in the time!
It's frustrating sometimes.Last edited by Nutini; 28-06-2012 at 17:41. -

Are all your mates like the girl you mention?
I get teased quite a lot about spending so much time on my ps3 from my mates (which I always assume is because I'm a girl), but in a friendly jokey way, nothing that makes me feel bad about it.
Oh and my mum on the other hand hates the amount of time I spend on it, she'd rather I spend my time in more 'ladylike' activities

Re: Criticised for being a gamer?
I think it's just a misconception that will probably go away as gaming becomes more 'mainstream'. Gaming is no different to spending time reading a book or watching a film or television program. A lot of these people that view gaming in this negative way will be the same people that sit for the same amount of time watching mindless **** on TV without the benefit of actively engaging their brains or 'socialising' in the way a gamer might.

Re: Criticised for being a gamer? Not really actually, it's not something I experience often but when I do I feel like they are so unjustified to criticise the way someone else spends their time. I had to go on Uni exchange with this girl to Canada for 5 months so I was I guess forced into friendship, I shouldn't let it bother me really(Original post by facetious)

My 3 guy flatmates who I've lived with for 3 years actually enjoy the fact I'm a gamer because I am not like they ever imagined a gamer to be, and always seem quite interested in what's happening, once again it's all of these stereotypes that people imagine :P -
Re: Criticised for being a gamer?Yeah I totally agree with you on that one, the ironic thing is this girl in particular watches freaking Jersey and Geordie Shore every opportunity she gets, I wish I could just show the irony in her statements haha(Original post by Ape Gone Insane)

Re: Criticised for being a gamer?I'm sorry but gaming is very different to reading a book or watching a film/television lol, with reading a book or watching television your learning about the world rather than learning a ficticious world, also the majority of people read books or watch tv rather than playing on computer games therefore doing them is much more sociable. Gaming is addicitve, whereas reading books and watching tv isn't as once you've read a book or watched a tv programme, you don't do it again for hours and hours.(Original post by Ape Gone Insane)

Re: Criticised for being a gamer?
Depends how long you spend gaming and how much you talk about it tbh, the thing with gaming is people spend hours on it a lot of the time which obviously comes across a bit neeky and I don't think it holds water with the TV comparison cause gamers spend more time gaming than people spend watchin TV. Try and take an objective look at how much time you spend gaming cause I'd say an average of more than 10 hours a week is excessive as a teenager, that's time you can use for getting pissed and being a lout

Re: Criticised for being a gamer? This may change your world but there are such things as fiction books, TV and films. And why is sitting watching TV or reading a book more sociable than talking to other people online whilst playing?(Original post by lamalas600)

Re: Criticised for being a gamer?
It's utterly foolish to waste time on video games in imaginary worlds, watching TV a movie or a film or reading a book is so not the same!...

most ironic thing about this statement? I got it off word for word from a girl about a week ago. She watches "Made In Chelsea".
I'm off to play Zelda Skyward Sword.

Re: Criticised for being a gamer?
The stigma surrounding gaming has basically disappeared as I've grown up. It was far more prevalent when I was about 12.
No surprise that the quality of games has dropped dramatically whilst the popularity of gaming has risen, SAYS I. **** what most people think. Most people are tasteless idiots. -

Re: Criticised for being a gamer?Yes ok go write a blog or update your twitter about your Internet bullies..(Original post by Nutini)
What a totally irrelevant comment to make on a forum
I like how you felt the need to add the crying face as if it made your statement any more bold though.

Oh no people said bad things to me on the Internet...
