Re: How do you make money when you have no job?
Turn tricks for a living....
Ah. Kidding.
Look around your local shops' windows. One of my friends managed to get a job by simply doing that and asking around her mother's friends etc.
...Otherwise... No, I'm sorry... I can't think of anything else. :/ -
Re: How do you make money when you have no job?
Temp work, if you have any office experience at all. Or not even office experience, just being a nice person who can use Word and answer phones which is good enough. Apply to loads of temp agencies and expect to be called the night before for a job. Keep your phone on you at all time!
My friend did this when he was really stuck for work and he had a tiny weeny bit of office experience (got a friend who runs a business? Ask them if they'll let you fake doing a bit of office help to put on your CV and brief them so they know what to say if they get a reference call!) He got a job offer the day after for 3 days doing receptionist work. After the first job, the temp agency knows you're reliable and getting the work will be easier. The more jobs you turn up for and get good recommendations for, the better you'll do. The temp agencies will know you're a go to person and you'll end up being the top of their list when a job comes in. -
Re: How do you make money when you have no job?Sign up on sky bet to get a free 10 pound bet and then use that to win some money and keep doing that, I've made 55 pound in a week and a half.(Original post by Anetata)
I am currently job hunting, and I have very little money in my account, and loads of urgent bills to pay, and literally no source of income.
I have applied for LOADS of jobs, in fact that's all I have been doing all day every day
I have had an interview today which went well, but the job doesn't start untill the middle of July and is paid monthly I think :/
I have tried selling my clothes on ebay, as I used to do it but it is barely worth it now, as I am not getting many bids if any at all, and after all the fees I am not getting much and keep having to relist items
I have even got all creative and made custom made shorts but it is so hard to shift them, even tough I thought they were awesome
I play violin and have tried to advertise tutoring services for kids but got no interest at all :/
I just wanted to see if anyone got any experience or tips for making some money in the meantime between jobs? I know I'll probably get one eventually but I need money NOW!

Re: How do you make money when you have no job?Urgent you say? Unless she is homeless, I doubt she meets the criteria for urgency.(Original post by SFsucks)
I think if it is urgent you may still be able to, i would give the Job Centre a call 2moro to check. I would also try your university, student service, they maybe able to offer financial help.
I can tell you with 100% certainty that students on the summer break aren't eligible for unemployment benefits.
The maintenance loan is for 12 months and most student rental contracts are for 12 months, so even if her parents have kicked her out, she can live in her student accomodation. -
Re: How do you make money when you have no job?I don't know anyone whose maintenance loan covers their accommodation for a whole 12 months or anyone that can stay in uni accommodation for 12 months(Original post by marcusfox)

Re: How do you make money when you have no job?yeah, mines barely even covers 8 months. No way a maintenance loan covers 12 months.(Original post by EllieNellie)

Re: How do you make money when you have no job?
100% you can not go on JSA as you are still considered to be in full time education.
OP, have you really looked hard, or have you only looked hard at jobs you actually want to do?
I know plenty of people who moan about there being no jobs, yet they all say this kind of thing:
Get down your local temp agencies and have a look, you'll might well be doing a crap job (I stood in a warehouse sorting nuts and bolts for 10 hours a day one summer), but if you're really desperate I reckon the work is out there.(Original post by 321zero)
I've had some calls from agencies but they've offered me jobs that I am simply unwilling to do, such as standing by a pump for 13 hours a day to make sure members of the public don't trip over it...

Oh yeah - also search for data entry clerk positions, mind numbingly dull typing away information all day but atleast you're inside and unless you're a total idiot you'll get the job pretty easily.Last edited by EGjeff; 28-06-2012 at 21:58. -
Re: How do you make money when you have no job?... hang on. I'd like a job. I don't need a job. Therefore I can search until I find one I wish to do.(Original post by EGjeff)

Re: How do you make money when you have no job?Mods take down any adverts I think.(Original post by elixira)
I know someone who applied for JSA during a summer at uni, they just said they'd dropped out. Post your eBay here, someone might take pity and buy something?
Lying about your JSA during the summer sounds a very immoral and illegal thing to do! -
Re: How do you make money when you have no job?Funny, because I know plenty of people in their second year (which the OP seems to be) who are renting house shares from private landlords and they must pay rent over the entire 12 month period, even if they aren't there for 12 months.(Original post by EllieNellie)
I don't know anyone whose maintenance loan covers their accommodation for a whole 12 months or anyone that can stay in uni accommodation for 12 months
The only reason that these properties are let for the entire 12 months is purely so the landlord isn't left with dead time of the student paying 9 months while they are there and nothing for the remaining 3. But they have exclusive use of the property at this time.
Much of these rents are £45-65 per week not including or including bills, making between £2,340 and £3,380 for the year.
If in fact you have signed an accomodation contract that is 9 months, such as those provided by universities directly, such ast halls of residence, surely you're intelligent enough (having gotten a university place and all) and will have taken into account where you will live and how to support yourself for the time that you aren't there, usually at your parents, and the rental costs will be reduced accordingly.
If you live away from home and study outside London, you can get £4,950 maximum maintenance loan and £2,906 maintenance grant, totalling £7,856, which gives you about £150 a week to live on over the course of the year. -
Re: How do you make money when you have no job?Yeah, I don't want to look like I'm advocating it, I wouldn't do it! Just because someone asked if you can claim between uni years :P(Original post by 321zero)

Re: How do you make money when you have no job?Negged because I didn't want to spend 13 hours a day, watching a pump. For some of us, life is too short, clearly not for you.(Original post by 321zero)

Isn't it bizarre, you get countless qualifications, do years of part-time work and yet it still proves very hard to find even temporary work. Damn recession.
Throbber. -
Re: How do you make money when you have no job?I wish rent was this cheap! 12 month contracts often have a period where you pay a retainer but you can't stay in the accommodation.(Original post by marcusfox)

Re: How do you make money when you have no job?If you play the violin try and see if you are allowed to go into your local primary school and get kids to sign up with you there- of course you'll probably have to have a CRB check done but it's not much money in comparison to the money you could make. Trying selling other stuff apart from clothes on eBay e.g. old DVDs or gadgets you don't use. Or go around your neighborhood and see if there are any odd jobs that need doing. Have you thought have walking dogs for money- that kind of thing?!(Original post by Anetata)
