Re: What would you give to an elderly person as a gift?Ooooh, food hampers! That's a really nice idea. Thank you!(Original post by laura130490)
I used to get my nan and grandad plants, fancy biscuits and nice food hampers with tea and jams etc in. Seemed to go down well.
They don't drink wine so that's out of the equation..but I really like your idea of taking them out for the day. I might take them out for lunch, they really don't need anything. I could stick a pot plant in too, because they seem to like gardening. Thank you(Original post by Origami Bullets)
In my experience, the thing that elderly people often appreciate most is when people spend time with them. How about taking them out for a pub lunch in a nice location (by the sea / docks / countryside / similar?)
It's often hard to find material gifts for older people, especially when they have physical limitations. Diabetes etc. rules out many food gifts, arthritis in the fingers rules out many things that involve fine motor control, declining mental capacity (not necessarily dementia) can rule out books, jigsaws and puzzles, cataracts / poor eyesight can rule out books (but not audio / large print / coffee table picture books) etc., getting tired easily can rule out any gifts that require a certain level of physical activity . . . you get the idea. Some elderly relatives are a nightmare to buy for at Christmas / birthdays!
Other than gardening, are you aware of any special interests that they have? Alternatively, something for the house (a wine holder, with a nice bottle of wine for instance, or a cushion?) could be a good option.
That's a bit extravagant..it might be a little awkward if I bought them such an expensive gift. Nice idea though, I'll keep that in mind for my gran. Thanks!(Original post by philistine)
Something that might instil nostalgia, perhaps?
I'd buy them a phonograph player. -

Cake or something like that, my grandma is always thrilled when I come over with something I have baked she loved the brownies I made for her last time. Why do you need to get them a present it might look a little creepy if there is no particular occasion?
