Which book has the best closing line?
I love it when a book finished on a really strong closing line, even if it's sometimes a little cheesy!
For me, the last line of Silence of the Lambs is brilliant.
'But the face on the pillow, rosy in the firelight, is certainly that of Clarice Starling, and she sleeps deeply, sweetly, in the silence of the lambs.' -
Re: Which book has the best closing line?
The first line I thought of when I read the title was The Great Gatsby, but as someone's already said that I'd say this:
His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.
Dubliners ftw. -
Re: Which book has the best closing line?
I woke up and it was all a dream.
Just joking
The best is from the Mr Men books. I remember from the Mr Strong book, Mr Strong was really strong because all he ate was loads and loads of eggs. The last line was "And can you guess what Mr Strong had for desert that day? Ice Cream. Ha Ha! Best line ever when you're six years old

Re: Which book has the best closing line?I love Gatsby as a book, but I find the ending completely pretentious and rather verbose. The last line is good though, just the page of waffle before it needs to be removed!(Original post by Becky:)*)
The Great Gatsby: "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." -
Re: Which book has the best closing line?I read all three of those when I was at school, you've just reminded me how much I loved them! Thank you, will definitely have another read(Original post by Crimmy)
I always loved the final line of the amber spyglass
"and then what," said her daemon sleepily. "Build what?"
"The Republic of Heaven," said Lyra.
but it needs to be in context :L

Re: Which book has the best closing line?
Only the margin left to write on now. I love you, I love you, I love you.
Quite sentimental, but the end of I Capture the Castle always sticks in my head. As does the beginning, actually.
I'll add more when I think of them. Well, when I can get to my bookcase for a proper look. -
Re: Which book has the best closing line?Personally I think that "All was well." is an awful ending to a book. I'm a Harry Potter fan, but I found this ending rather disappointing.(Original post by VQG)
The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well. -
Re: Which book has the best closing line? She changed it at the last minute, just before it got published. Apparently the last word of the original sentence was "scar". I want to know what it was going to be.(Original post by Picture~Perfect)

Re: Which book has the best closing line?It would be interesting to know what she was going to say. Though I doubt it was very different.(Original post by syrettd)

Re: Which book has the best closing line?
I love this line

Gone with the wind:
"Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn."
Edit: Technically it's not the last line of the book and in the book he doesn't say frankly. But it is the most remembered and it is Butler's last line.Last edited by Picture~Perfect; 01-07-2012 at 13:45.
