Steps to become a Solicitor?
Hi all,
Aspiring Solicitor right here!
I'm just wondering, I've always understood that to become a solicitor you need to complete an LLP degree, and then secure a two year training contract with a law firm, after which you're a qualified Solicitor...
However, I was chatting to a mate of mine and he was saying this is not the case but never got to finish what he was saying due to whatever.
So, now I'm confused! I know that my mates Dad is a Barrister, and so maybe he was thinking about the route you need to take to be a Barrister and got it confused with a Solicitor.
Nevertheless, I just want to make sure I've got this right...

LLB degree > Legal Practice Course > Training contract > Qualify as a solicitor
or
Other degree > Graduate Diploma in Law > Legal Practice Course > Training contract > Qualify as a solicitorLast edited by richie123; 29-06-2012 at 15:08. -

LLB degree > Legal Practice Course > Paralegal > Training Contract > Qualify
Seems like one of the most common way of getting in now.
You could also become a Legal Executive, which means you don't need to do the academic requirements, but it takes much longer to do.

Re: Steps to become a Solicitor?Fierce, unrelenting, and impossible without a great CV. That's not just for the city firms, even a high street firm is incredibly competitive (because some of the best graduates prefer local firms)(Original post by chelseafan)
Whats the competition for training contracts like? -

1) Get a loan for £30,000.
2) Withdraw it all in cash.
3) Burn it.
4) Go to the job centre.
Same result. Will save you at least 4 years of your life. -

Law degree >start 5 years employment >ILEX fast track diploma > finish 5 years employment > LPC > qualify
Effectively it is six years (seven if the LPC is done part-time) rather than three years from leaving university, but many people are taking that long because of difficulty securing training contracts/paying for LPC.
