Going to be buying an xbox 360
I've finally finished my A-Levels and have been putting off buying an xbox 360 for a while now. I am thinking of buying the new xbox 360 250gb version. I have heard of this RROD or red dot of death on the new xbox 360s. My question is how likely it is I will get this and is it covered by the warranty? Also does the warranty stand for a pre owned xbox 360 assuming I buy it from a shop such as Game or Gamestation? And are there any recommended games I should buy?

He wanted an xbox, not a PS3. Thus, I will answer his question.

In my years of owning the xbox since... 2008 (?), I have only ever had the RROD once, and it was still covered by warranty. It took a long time to fix, granted, but they gave me a free 1-month xbox live card, which covered the wait.

For a preowned xbox, the warranty probably doesn't stand, unless the previous owner also handed in the warranty with the xbox.

As for recommended games, these include:
Halo 3, Halo 4 (maybe), Halo Reach, COD 4, Fable 2, Naruto (if you like that sort of thing), Final Fantasy 13, Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, etc. I have lots of them, I'll come back when I remember some.

I see so it would be advisable to get a new xbox 360 because of the warranty cover. I'm going to go in store and ask them about it later.
I've always been an xbox fan and halo fan. I remember the original xbox and Halo. Ahhh nostalgia.

And they remade Halo 1, to Halo: Anniversary. Pick it up if you like it

My budget is about £200. So I'll see what I can pick up for that.

    Why?
XBOX 360 is prone to the Red Light of Death a lot. I know 4 friends who have exchanged their Xbox due to the problem, myself have owned an Xbox 360 when it first came out and within 8 months it started having problems, overheating; constant freezing; disk tray problems then the eventual RLOD.

I've had my PS3 since 2008 and have had no problems with it. It still works perfectly. Plus, XBOX 360 is so out-dated now. If anything, wait till the XBOX 720 if you really want a Microsoft product, which will probably come out Q1 2013.

The games are so much better. Killzone. Uncharted. Little Big Planet. Metal Gear Solid (best game ever). Resistance 1, 2 and 3. God of War series and God of War ascension :danceboy: and of course The Last of Us which looks absolutely epic. Trust me. Get a PS3. They're so cheap now as well. You can probably get one for £200 brand new with games.

I purchased an xbox360 back in 2008, and red rings of death were a big problem back then and more so before, my original xbox stopped reading discs, starting freezing alot and eventually got rrod but that was after about 3 years. I've bought the new slim and had not a single problem so far.

Essentially the original few models of the xbox360 were incredibly unreliable, since the xenon in 2005, the xbox360 hardware has been revised 6 times to make it much more robust, buy a new version of the slim and you won't have any problems, warranty covers all faults for the first year anyway.

Buy the 250gb slim new, and try to get a few games in a bundle or something.

    It used to be.

The new models get it very rarely now.

OP: Get a bundle, see if you can Halo CE thrown in there or similar?

I got my Xbox from Game plus 3 yr break down cover from under £200 Plus I got Fifa 11 with it (which was a brand new release at the time) so traded it in and got £30 for it. Bought Bulletstorm instead

Got a bonus in work at the end of my 2nd year of uni so treated myself to the 250gb slim. Have had no RROD or any troubles with it in the year i've owned it.
It's never over heated but they do exude a lot of warmth when on for an extended period. Nice in the winter but need a window open in the summer otherwise it can get boiling! Paid under £200 and got a plug and play set and Fifa with it

Personally, i'd get a PC, or upgrade your current one, if your pc is already good enough then get either a PS3 or a wii (or wii-u this autumn).

    Why?
anything you can play on a 360, can easily be played on on a pc. The 360 has no decent exculusives i can think of (apart from lost odyssey, Blue dragon, Halo and Gears of Wars)

But on the other hand, 90% of all the games you can play on the Nintendo wii (or upcoming wii-u) is bound to be an exclusive or have exclusive features not to be had on the 360 or Ps3.
Also Sony do have a HUGE collection of worth while exclusives such as punch time smash, Metal gear solid, sly cooper, many more than i can care to count

Will the 720 be backwards compatible with original Xbox and Xbox 360 games? I've had a PS3 since 2009; I went through 2 Xbox 360's prior to it's acquisition. Both Xboxes got the RROD. These were the older white models however. I can't speak on the susceptibility of the newer models to the RROD. I miss being able to play both of the KOTOR's though; I'd like to get an Xbox so that I may do that, but I'm willing to wait for the 720 if it's backwards compatible with original Xbox games.

I don't believe RROD is a problem with new xboxes. I've had my xbox for like 5 or 6 years and haven't had any problems with it. If you have an Xbox under warranty I'm pretty sure they will give you another for free.

Anyway, I have a PS3 and 360 and I think that the 360 is a far superior console, especially if you are going to be playing with friends. Xbox live destroys PSN and tbh I very rarely use my PS3, only really to play PS3 exclusive games. If there is ever a multi platform game, I will always pick it up on 360. I have also heard that some multi platform games look much worse on PS3 than on the Xbox.

Got my xbox elite about 5 years ago, i think.

Never once had a problem with it and I do play quite alot.

If you get an xbox with a significant level of memory then I suggest installing some of the larger games or the ones you play more often. This reduces noise and overheating greatly, might be a factor in my xbox's continuing functionality.
