How do i get out of a phone contract?
ok im currently signed up for a 24month contract with o2 and im nearly a year through it but im going traveling for a year and i cant take the phone with me due to international useage charges etc. etc. so does anyone know of any ways to get out of the contract without having to pay it off in a lump sum which seems a rather expensive option ..
    cheers

Can you not see if you can drop to a lower priced tarriff then cancel after that? It'll still be a lump sum but a smaller one. I did it once with Three, changed from £30 a month to £10 to cancel, saved me £60 (only had 3 months left).

afaik it's basically impossible, the only way to get out of the contract is to buy out (i.e. pay the monthly line rental x number of months left on the contract).

the previous advice of switching to a lower tariff and then buying out is sound.
