Second Year, going on third
Hi all,
Just had my exam results from second year and I've somehow scraped a 2.2, which is brilliant because I was forced to take Russian language after another module was cancelled. I was rubbish at Russian and it dragged everything down.
Anywhoo, I've got 55.3 this year as my average and this year is the first one that counts. I got a low 2.1 last year.
My question to you all is how likely do you think it might be, for me to drag my overall degree up to a 2.1 when I once again drew short straw in special subjects?
My special subject next year was my last choice, with a tutor that despises me because I had to walk out through her induction lecture (before I even joined the Uni) because I had flu and was about to hurl. This beastie is the thing I have to write my dissertation around too.
Anyone had experience in having to go up a grade boundary while having to write a dissertation on a disliked subject with an uncooperative tutor?
She's still being petty even though I apologised and there's no way I can switch tutors or subject (I've begged :P).
This year was worth 40% and wasn't awesome, and next year is 60%.
Any comforting stories?
btw, if anyone cares, I'm doing straight History at Hull as per my sig. I'm also not about to stress over this as I can do an MA at Hull with a 2.2, but I'd prefer a 2.1, even if just to get my family off my back

Could you type up your other modules, the credits they're worth, and what percentage you got in them
I think with hard work a 2:1 is feasible

All my modules this year were 20 credits.
Core module: 65
Crappy free electiveRussian: 43
S2 Option 1: 53
S1 Option 1: 52
S2 Option 2: 57
S1 Option 2: 62 -
Re: Second Year, going on third
I sympathise with you, I had a not dissimilar problem and it's a real well I let you fill in the blanks.
Sounds like you have no choice but to take her module. Isn't all your work meant to be anonymous ? Can you not make contact with her unless you have to ?
I hope you dissertation does not have your name on it only an ID number? Other than this all I can say is do the work with as least contact with as possible.
Can you not take alternative options ? -

It is anonymous technically but because we have compulsory meetings with our dissertation tutors to discuss what we're doing/where we're at, it kind of isn't. Yeah, I thought about staying away from her as much as I can and relying on the department head's moderation of the marks after, but going to her lectures/seminars around the dissertation are going to be a pain in the backside.
Cheers for the reply

Re: Second Year, going on thirdSo she takes both lectures and seminars ? If so, you'll have to be disciplined and converse minimally without making it seem you are deliberately doing it, if you know what I mean.(Original post by Nolfie)

This year's going to be fun xD -
Re: Second Year, going on thirdYeah definitely. The whole anonymous thing doesn't stretch as far as meetings to discuss your work goes, and honestly, if your tutor head is best buds/the protégé of one of the department higher ups, even your moderation is under threat.(Original post by Zenomorph)
I find it very interesting how very unaccountable the system is when basically you can have 1 or 2 errant academics holding you to ransom, and yet they are answerable to no one and are subsidised by us. Interesting to say the least.
Oh well, gotta work with what we have. -
Re: Second Year, going on thirdBest of luck to you.(Original post by Nolfie)
