laptop went def con 2 on me i.e. black screening (graphics card problem) at the end of uni and i was sure it was dead. brought it back to east london and it was healed.like magic

the guy who fixed it told me that despite fixing the problem, i should look online and find a place to buy new cards (well my dad told me to do this anyway).

ive heard, that there have been problems with the nvidia geforce 8700m Sli (ive never had the problems personally [until this], and ive had my laptop for 4 years)





point of this thread is:

1) is there anything i need to think about beforehand before i try and find a place to purchase them? or is it a simple 'google the name i mentioned-buy it-put it in-job done' kind of thing?

2) guy told me it needs to be replaced, given this and the fact that my laptop is quite bulky (not like an ultrabook, my laptop is essentially a 17 inch brick), can i take it that this also means i can potentially try to get a new/better/more durable card that wont die from me over using it? (dad told me the main reason this one died was because of the heat)

if so is the only condition that the motherboard needs to support it?

You can't upgrade laptop graphics except on a very very limited range of top end gaming PCs (by top end I mean £1.5+k) and even then it's very rare.

I have an Alienware m9750. Five years ago, if would have met your requirements hands down

Apparently the only card that will work with it (after some quick googling) is an AMD 3870M

I assume the full name you are referring to is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870?
I was looking at this:

Regarding the video, to summarise it, there is a list on the right hand side, higher up the card is the better, which compared to my old 8700m SLI is a little better (though to be honest, I don't know how credible the video is).


I have to admit, I'm not certain whether or not there will be much signficant difference compared to the impression I get from looking at your link of the effort put in to this. Though, I'll ask if it's possible with my version

You could buy a replacement card but they may involve some soldering and it's going to cost nearly £100

According to benchmarks the 3870M is twice as powerful as a 8700M - and you can run two 3870s in SLI if you wish.
