    Wisdom teeth removal.
    Hello again,

I wanted to ask some personal experiences of people who have had their wisdom teeth removed.

I need all of mind taken out because I keep getting infections in the bottom two caused by the top two pinching my gums and the dentist said she doesn't think there is room for the bottom two anyway so they may as well come out as well.

She can't get an X-ray of my mouth because I can't get the film back far enough so I've been referred to the hospital for a better X-ray. She said she could take the top ones out there and then but I was too much of a whimp.

What is it like? I have had 4 teeth removed before, but I hate things at the back of my mouth so I'm dreading this... Is it as bad as I'm making it out to be??

I had all of them removed a few years ago, it's really not that bad. There's a bit of pain for a few days, but you should be able to control that with a small cocktail of drugs, and if not, it's only for a few days. Presumably, you'll be under general anesthetic for the tooth-plucking, as I was, so you're not actually going to feel anything at the back of your mouth except for the aforementioned dull ache. Good luck (not that you need it).

Thanks for the reply. The dentist wanted to do it under local anaesthetic, but I don't know. I don't really want to be put out completely, I also may have to have an operation to remove 3 ganglion cysts from my wrists, but like you said I don't really want to be awake while the dentist is fiddling around doing that.

Thanks to the person who bumped it up too. I'd completely forgotten I'd even posted it!

General anaesthetic is awesome. I was under it for a colonoscopy and endoscopy and you just drift away without noticing like a peaceful sleep.

The only problem is that everyone in my family who has been under GA has woken up and been violently sick afterwards! I'd rather avoid that... But I think I might be violently sick with the dentist doing it whilst under local anaesthetic, so maybe it would be best!

Still got to wait for the letter to come, it's been 2 weeks and I haven't heard anything from the private hospital so it looks like I'll have to chase that up.

Hi there! Im also having a removal!!! Im nervous too...but I only need one removing... do you know how much it costs roughly??? I think Im going for local because apparently its a lot more costly with general... someone told me it doesnt hurt really during the operation..just a dull ache after...but its the needle coming at you thats making me nervous too. never had a tooth pulled but if youre dreading it as much as you say you could have it done privately and they can put you under so you wont even know its happening and if you dont like the idea of being knocked out your dentist can prescribe you valium to ease the nerves of it

I am going privately anyway because I have had 5 infections in 4 months so I need it done ASAP. I have had 4 teeth pulled out before, so I know it's fine but I'm just not very good at things right at the back of my mouth. Even brushing the back wisdom teeth makes me gag which is why I'm worried.

I have no idea how much it will cost, the hospital will hopefully give me a quote. I'm worried about the costs too because I'm going to have to see a private surgeon about my wrists aswell because the NHS are utterly useless so it's going to be a bl**dy expensive summer!

had mine removed under a GA just over a year ago - it was the most straightforward thing. No pain whatsoever although my mouth was a bit swollen for a couple of days after.

I'm also due to have all four of mine out under general anesthetic in the next few weeks. I'm also terrified as I've never been put under before. Two teeth at the top are impacted, so it'll require incisions into the gums to get them out - my dentist won't take them out under local, and with my anxiety/fear of dentists as bad as it is, it's not sensible to go there anyway.

Best of luck. I signed my consent form two weeks ago - just waiting to hear when the operation will be. Hopefully before September. The bottom (impacted) ones have caused me so much pain because they're decaying under the gum and keep getting infected.

    I hate wisdom teeth.

    Re: Wisdom teeth removal.
I've had all four of mine out, the top set at 15 which they normally won't do at such an early age but they were causing crowding in my upper set of teeth so they had to come out).

My advice to you is get the best dentist you can, if you can afford it, go private.

My dentist is brilliant and had them out in what seemed like minutes. The actual removal is not too bad at all (I had them done under local), the injections in the roof of your mouth for the anaesthetic are probably worse!

You feel seriously wobbly after they're done, so don't try and get public transport home. Particularly as your mouth will keep filling with blood

The aftercare for the holes is a bit finicky, you have to be very careful with eating for about a week and you'll need to keep them very clean.

The most important thing immediately after you've had the teeth out is not to disturb the formation of the blood clots, as these will be what protects the exposed bone from infection. So you can't swill anything round your mouth for several hours afterwords and only drink with a straw.

If your dentist is good you shouldn't need stitches to close the wounds and he shouldn't have had to cut into the bone of the jaw. All of which makes healing much easier and quicker. It'll also mean they're less painful afterwards. My dentist told me to buy some painkillers with codeine in them but I only had to take one, the night after they were taken out and after a day I didn't even need normal painkillers.

So to sum up, I suppose, if you're dentist is good you'll be fine. If you're dentist is bad having your wisdom teeth out can be hell.

Oh and PS. if you can avoid having a general anaesthetic do, you'll feel so much better afterwards and recover quicker. Being put right out screws you over completely. And if the dentist is doing their job properly you shouldn't need to be put out. A general is the resource of a rubbish dentist tbh.

I'm having my wisdom tooth out under local anaesthetic tomorrow. Scared is an understatement.

I've had wisdom teeth out before but it was always under general. I can't afford it this time so I guess I'll just have to be brave.

I had my bottom two wisdom teeth removed under general the other month. I'm not gonna lie, for the first couple of days it hurt like hell. It felt like there were two weights on either side of my mouth for about two weeks. You'll have difficulty eating for a while afterwards (say hello to soft food!) and you have to watch how you eat, as you don't want to stop the blood clots forming properly and getting dry socket. Sorry if anyone's told you this already, but no one really told me in advance.

Other than that though, it's fine Really, general isn't all that amazing. When I woke up I burst into tears, threw up and spent the next two days walking around like a zombie. When the time comes to get the upper two wisdom teeth removed, I'm definitely having it done under local (unless they're as impacted as my bottom two were, in which case, DAMN IT).

Honestly you're making the right decision, having a general makes you feel so much worse afterwards and it takes longer to recover. With a local you'll be fine in a day.

Thank you, you have reassured me so much!
See, I never had any bad side effects with the general, i woke up and feeling fine with no groggy side effects at all. In fact I LOVED the drugs they gave me, I felt as high as a kite and embarrassingly, I found the whole situation hilarious .

I'm just worried about the injections and apparently they have to tug quite hard at your face to get the tooth out. I've a feeling that I'm going to scream the whole dentists down.

Having teeth out is fine. I'm just really worried about it because I can't cope with things at the back of my mouth. I cope with a lot of pain day to day so again I'm not worried about the pain. It's just having someone with a pair of pliers (not literally) pulling teeth at the back of my mouth.. I think I'll be sick! I can't even get the X-ray film that far back! Plus my bottom ones haven't even come through fully yet.

The worst part of tooth extraction or dental work is the L.A. injection. It hurts a lot, I have a high pain threshold and it makes my eyes water. But it's over in seconds and then you can't feel a thing. You'll be fine.

I'm due to have my lower left one removed in the next couple of months or so, Saw the specialist yesterday. I am having it out under General mainly because of a fear of needles (1 vs 5 or more) I know what I would rather have!! and also because I have a TMJ disorder with limited opening, I have been told my TMJ issue may get worse (initially) :'( soft food for the whole of final year, they basically need to effectively dislocate and jack open my jaw to get the wretched tooth out. But I've had other teeth out before for braces and it was so so (this was before I developed TMJ disorder and my needle phobia also)
