    Part Time Work
    Hi all,

I am starting a BSc Social Work degree from September and I will be looking to earn a bit of extra money in term time to make ends meet/have spending money.

However, I am unsure whether to apply for a part time job due to the demands of uni work. Has anyone got experience of working part time during a social work degree or another similar social science degree? Is it do-able? And more importantly is it worth the extra time, considering having to fit it in around placements/freshers/research etc?

    Thanks!

While you are in lectures it shouldn't be a problem, but when you are on placement full-time, it depends on whether you coudl also cope with working on top of that.

I've been told that it's possible in the first year, but as above, year 2 and 3 with placements can get a bit full on!

Interesting. The thing is whether I'll be able to get by or not money wise. If I'm fine then its a case of whether its worth it if its only likely to be just for the first year, as I can see the second and third year placements taking over. I'm pretty sure Bath sends us on 30 days placement first year, then 80 second and 90 in our final year....

Yeah UWE send us on a 30 day placement in the first year too, but I'm going to tackle that issue with work nearer the time! lol
I'm using the first year as a saving year, to hopefully give me some dollar to last me through year 2 and 3.
If I find working the first year too stressful alongside uni, i'll quit. I just didn't want to hand my notice in and then be sat at home with nothing to do, when I could have been earning money...
It probably depends on what you think your social life will be like as well. Do you want to join any clubs or party the nights away?? If so, I'd probably say not to get a job as well lol.
With work, I'm thinking more about the holidays we get (Half term; Christmas, Easter, Summer holidays..)

It's a hard call to make - good luck x

UWE and Bath are right next to each other really, I wonder where they plan to send us on placement! Thats another topic though...

People say the first year is the best and to make the most of it, I plan to do this but I'm under no illusions, this course is not gonna be easy! I'm fairly social and will probably join a couple of societies, I think the idea of getting part time work was hopeful rather than probable. I think I'll have to get temp work or something during the holidays to raise some funds! With Bath being a 3 term year (I think!) the holidays should be long enough to enable me to do that.

I don't know about Bath but UWE use Bristol, South Glos, part of Bath and North Somerset. I'm sure there is an overlap somewhere but I'm guessing Bath cover more Chippenham, Oxford, Swindon, Warminster etc..? I don't know! Exciting stuff though, I can't wait until we go on our placements.

Quite a wide area then by the sounds of it! Hopefully Bath will cover the Oxford area as it will be convenient to commute for me. I just can't wait to start the course now!
