Re: where to live in second year?Cheers! I have heard that moving into halls is the whole part of uni experience, i'm just wondering because i will be a second year with a little bit more workload on me than first years, will halls affect me not getting work done? what halls did you move into?(Original post by Bezaberry)
I liked both, the house gave you so much more freedom, no fire alarms, no noise complaints, no security guards poking their heads in whenever they please, but you have the added risk of no security/having psycho neighbours. I lived with the people I lived in halls with when I moved to a house, so it was okay. Make sure your landlord/lady isn't a complete ass aswell, cos it will drive you insane.

Re: where to live in second year?I wasn't in Manchester, I just thought I'd share my experiences haha. If you haven't lived in halls I would definitely do it, it's a lot of fun and although it's annoying at times (the kitchen) it's a really good year I don't think the increased workload will be that much of an issue. Houses as I said are pretty good aswell, the freedom is awesome, it's your own house and you can do what you want in it. We had security guards at halls an we were only allowed to sign one person in at a time. And because a load of bad manz had been fighting at one point we had a total visitor ban. And if you have security guards they will 100% be ass holes. ;P(Original post by Shay2012)

Re: where to live in second year?haha sorry, it sounds pretty crap you were only allowed one visitor a time, i'll probably move into halls. did it work out cheaper living in halls for you? or was the house the cheaper option?(Original post by Bezaberry)

Re: where to live in second year?Halls were £85 a week and you had to pay £2.50 to use a washing machine every time.(Original post by Shay2012)

House was £55 a week including bills, 5 bedroom, massive room aswell, rented washing machine at £12 each for the year.
But you're in Manchester so it'll probably be more in the house.
Living in the house was cool, but if I'm honest I would rather have lived in halls again, even with all the rigmarole it was a cool place to live with a good atmosphere. -
Re: where to live in second year?Which halls are you considering? Cause I'm in the same boat really, I want the whole uni experiences which I'll get if i'm in halls, but I'm clueless at the moment.(Original post by Shay2012)
Cheers, i'm considering halls at the minute, mainly because its the whole part of uni experience and the atmosphere. really appreciate your advice mate. -
Re: where to live in second year?I was thinking on John Lester as an option, but it's only January yet lol you going to salford then?(Original post by justiceisjust)

Re: where to live in second year?Yeah, but I don't want to live in Salford, I'd rather live in Manchester considering its much nicer and only a 30 minute walk/5 minutes on the train(Original post by Shay2012)

Re: where to live in second year?I really don't know where i'm going to live just looking at places now. you going into first year then? or are you a second year coming?(Original post by justiceisjust)

Re: where to live in second year?
there's student houses directly across the road from salford university, all the accommodation is around the uni. also the uni is less than a 30 min walk from manchester centre, more like 10 minutes walking which is nothing. i'm not in uni at the moment but i get the bus past the uni as i live in salford

Possible room-mate search :)
Hi all,
I'm beginning my first year at Uni this September on an English Creative Writing course at Salford Uni. I plan to live in Manchester/Salford, preferably within walking distance to Uni and easy to get to the city centre. I'm hoping to find a house share with like minded people and would like to do this before hand, instead of moving in and meeting the people I'll be sharing with on the day.
Is anybody else looking for a house share? Is it your first year at Uni and you want to move in with people you will get along with?
I think its a good idea to meet people before hand so we know what we're getting into instead of having to survive an academic year with people we dispise.
Suggestions, comments, opinions all welcome...

Re: Which accommodation?from what iv heard castle irwell is very social and has lots of parties, IQ seems to have a good social life but folk say your regarded as snobs if you go there(Original post by Dbrown18)
In terms of social life, whats better, Castle irwell or IQ? -
Re: Castle Irwell Accommodation??
I have already accepted an offer and paid my deposit.apparently its pretty good if you are a party animal and want to make new friends. You will have to share toilets with quite a lot of people as castle irwell can accommodate over 1000 people.
Its my first year and i didnt want to miss a chance to get an accommodation managed and looked after by university.I was offered a room in castle irwell with a deadline of 24/5 to accept the offer.
All I can say is that it definitely wont be as bad as living in a house with couple of housemates. At castle irwell, there will always be plenty of people around to hang out with and apparently there is a little pub or something which is quite lively and full of characters.
Its cheap too.but farthest from uni ( about a mile)but there is free bus service every 30 minutes so it isnt too bad.
what will you be studying? -
Re: Castle Irwell Accommodation??
Castle Irwell is the biggest ****hole you could live in, quite frankly. If dirty accommodation doesn't really throw you off, or the idea of sharing a house with 11 people with tiny, dirty showers and a miniscule kitchen, then you may be happy there.
The only benefit, as mentioned above, is the party-life you'll have there. There's always a house party somewhere and you'll be able to make plenty of friends.
Just be warned: it really, really is disgusting.
