Re: Why do so many girls these days lack any sort of interests/hobbies?You are putting everyone in a very very small box there. Lots of people have hobbies they just don't go on about them as it can sound pretentious and frankly it doesn't always interest people i.e. I've never met a (straight) guy who is happy for me to talk about musical theatre or ballet for a prolonged period of time so I generally won't bother, also saying "I play the harp" just sounds posh, people don't really get it so I don't talk about it much. I only tend to find out about peoples interesting hobbies when I get to know them and we have a proper conversation, "mainstream" topics are easy for a light chat with someone you don't know that well as most people will know what your on about (though if you talk to me about most reality TV shows and R&B I won't have a clue).(Original post by Anonymous)
This is something that's been on my mind a lot lately. When I think about my male friends and what they do, many of them have interests and hobbies, for example one is a real film buff, some DJ, play guitar, play football etc. A lot of my female friends though just seem to enjoy watching The Only Way is Essex and X-factor, listening to whatever radio 1 plays (Ollie Murs, Ed Sheeran etc) and they don't seem to ever think a film is good unless it's got an attractive male in it somewhere, or it's overly sentimental like The Notebook. When I think back on most of the girls I've liked, they've not been like this, they've all been genuinely interesting people but they're just getting hard to find, even at uni where you expect people to be a bit less mainstream as it were.
Same could be said for guys who just watch football and play video games and drink like a fish, doesn't mean it applies to everyone. Also football and playing guitar are pretty mainstream if you want to get all hipster on us. Though why does mainstream have to be bad (saying that I spend way to much of my time listening to random music from various places) Ed Sheeran's been out a while, he's only recently got to the charts and he's worked hard to get there. Why does as soon as someone get's in the charts it makes almost half the people go "Oh he was so much better last yar bro, before he totes sold out" and the about the other half go "OHMIGOD he is like so amazing" everyone GET OVER YOURSELF just enjoy the music... Rant done

Re: Why do so many girls these days lack any sort of interests/hobbies?
I have hobbies, which I am very much involved in.. and as do all of my female friends. However, It seems that when groups of guys hang out it seems to usually be based around a hobby or doing something e.g playing football or playing videogames, whereas when I meet up with friends its often for a chat and catchup or to go out somewhere. Perhaps this is why it seems that way? Im obviously generalising here but i think that is the case to some extent.

Re: Why do so many girls these days lack any sort of interests/hobbies?
You sound like a guy I dated a while ago who used to constantly have a go at me because the music I liked wasn't "meaningful" (I like mostly electro house, but I have a lot of different genres on my ipod and songs from 30+ years ago). The tv I watched was "trash" (I like to watch the soaps and Geordie Shore and Keeping Up With The Kardashians, but I also watch documentaries pretty much every day). The friends I kept were "stupid", he only knew my friends through facebook and they are not stupid. I "had no hobbies", I actually like to read a lot, travel, cook and am teaching myself French.
Just because some people don't brag about the "high brow" activities they do doesn't mean they lack interests and hobbies. I just feel the need to shout it off the rooftops that I watch documentaries every day and listen to classical music.
People are also capable of enjoying both "high" and "low" brow activities, sometimes I just want to chill out and watch something entertaining which doesn't require any thought. Doesn't mean I'm an sheep or an idiot who can't cope with anything intellectually challenging. -
Re: Why do so many girls these days lack any sort of interests/hobbies?How do you feel about classical music played on the ukulele?(Original post by tssf_skye)
I guess a lot of girls just want to fit in, and do so by following the crowd, I find it hard to find girls who like a lot of the same things/share the same interests as me.
I'm the kind of girl that hates ed sheeran, Justin bieber, chris brown rhianna etc I like proper music like led zeppelin, a day to remember etc i play guitar, sail, can't wait to travel the world, love science and geography and read books on geophysics. I guess i haven't really answered your question :') but I see where you're coming from, I find it similar with guys aswell though, a lot of them follow the crowd too :-)

Eurgh. You clearly have very simple minded female friends. I have friends that swim, horse ride, are artistic, I write and dip in and out of all of the above. In fairness though, I'm not straight - maybe girls that like guys are interested in other mindless and irritating things.(Original post by Anonymous)

Because we live on a terrible ****ing planet full of terrible ****ing people, and you are just as bad as those girls you so despise. In fact you're probably worse, because at least they're honest about about being complete failures as human beings, while you imbue yourself with pretentious, abject, utterly meaningless airs and graces revolving around this mystical idea that by telling anyone who'll ****ing listen that you're a special little flower because you don't conform to what you perceive to be 'social norms' you are somewhat better than them. Yes, the average girl may be a vapid ignorant whore, but you're a vapid conceited whore, and telling yourself otherwise doesn't change that fact.
Stop concerning yourself with the lives of other people, because in 80 years time we'll all be dead and none of this will matter.
that's one hilarious way to look at life

I really resent this stereotyping. Just because you've met lots of girls that like TOWIE, shopping and chick flicks, doesn't mean we all do.
I for one have plenty of hobbies: I love books, philosophy,I play guitar, I speak French and I'm currently learning spanish and I LOVE to travel. I also like going on boozy nights out. See, we aren't all vapid celebrity loving sheep.
All I need to do now is find a guy that likes the same things as me

Re: Why do so many girls these days lack any sort of interests/hobbies?
As many other girls have said here, you either have come across an astounding number of closed minded girls, or they just don't shout about what they do. I have lots of hobbies and interests, languages, music, animal conservation, film making, classic & foreign language films and as an atheist, I take a lot of time to read religious literature and research other people's opinions on the subject. However, when I'm tired at the end of the day, I might put something mindless on the TV, such as the X factor, or a chick flick. People are allowed to relax and chill out, and these "light" pieces of entertainment allow that by not requiring much thought. Just because I enjoy the x factor doesn't mean I can't enjoy a lot of the more intellectual stuff too.
And on the same note, when I'm out with my friends at night and I meet a guy, I don't start asking him about his religious opinions or ask if he's seen Le Scaphandre et le papillon. In those sorts of situations people tend to have generic conversation, which can often lead to light subjects such as who they think is good in the X Factor. It's only when I get to know a person a little bit better, or spend a lot of time with them/talking to them that I will bring up some of my other interests.
So yeah, maybe some of the girls you know are only interested in TOWIE or whatever, but don't rule everyone out. You never know about what people do unless you get to know them a bit better, rather than just getting to know them on the surface.Last edited by xoxjubixox; 01-07-2012 at 22:04. -
Re: Why do so many girls these days lack any sort of interests/hobbies?
The girls who hang around in forums are different from the large majority of women who don't. I can safely say that the very large majority of girls in this forum do have hobbies.
The TSR community isn't really representative of the average member of the public (most of us being liberal/leftie creative types who think different)Last edited by jblackmoustache; 01-07-2012 at 22:15. -
Re: Why do so many girls these days lack any sort of interests/hobbies?That's true, but then the girls who have nothing in their brains but TOWIE and when their next spray tan is are also just a miniscule percentage of girls out there.(Original post by jblackmoustache)
