    The alcohol buzz
I was just wondering why alcohol is so popular e.g. at nightclubs. I've heard that it tastes horrible, but people drink it to the extent that they are sick and have to be looked after and the next morning you forget most of what you did when you were drunk. I don't have anything against those who drink nor will I pass judgement on peoples' drinking stories. I'm just curious about why alcohol is such a big deal at parties and even formal dinner meals. For example, I have seen episodes of "Come dine with me" where contestants have marked each other down or complained a massive amount merely due to a either no or a lack of alcohol.

I don't know what alcohol people drink but I love the taste! I drink pretty much everything except for wine
Whether we like it or not, things are always a little more fun when alcoholoic beverages are involved!

For the most part alcohol tastes nasty, the only drinks I drink for actually enjoying the taste are bulmers cider. Other than that no.

Mostly because its a social lubricant and gives you confidence. Being drunk is also fun, and lots of alcohol tastes nice. Having a nice pint at a nice pub with your friends is very enjoyable.

Because most people are inhibited and alcohol helps them loosen up. Also in cold northerly countries from Ireland to Siberia people have been binge-drinking for millennia to make it seem a bit less grim.

It can make the party/dinner/whatever it is more easygoing and relaxed, simply because of alcohol. I'm not going to lie - I have a laugh when I'm drunk. Yeah, there's the problem with throwing up and not enjoying it, but that mainly comes from not knowing the limit. Every time I've had way too much to drink I remember telling myself never to drink again, but I guess it's part of learning what your limit is. The only problem is that it takes a lot of mistakes to know..... oh well

Also, I actually just really like the taste of beer so that's why I choose it above other drinks.

It makes me more sociable (pretty much why most people drink), i'm more open when I drink. Some alcohol tastes nice but ain't very nice. I only get too drunk if people force me to drink shots

It's all about finding the right drink for you, I myself love sloe gin and vodka is good as long as it's mixed with enough cola (or whatever) that it actually tastes good. In my experience it allows you to be a bit more carefree. What you don't want to do is drink so much so quickly that you feel sick, and also make sure you keep hydrated. Done right it can enhance a sociable event, in excess it can ruin a good time. You just need to experiment to find what's right for you, and there may be a few bad experiences before you get there.

I guess it does loosen you up and make you feel free, but only temporarily, aren't there other ways of socialising? How does it give you confidence, unless you drink so much that you forget your usual behaviour and do something you wouldn't do if you were sober. I'm sure there are nice tasting alcohols as opposed to the nasty ones. However, why not coffee, or some other drink, why specifically alcohol to drink with your friends.

If you haven't tasted a McDonalds while being drunk then I truly feel sorry for you.

Because Alcohol intoxicates you obviously... it also lessens your inhibitions meaning you are more free to be yourself without caring and therefore have more fun!

Peach schnapps are lovely though. I like the taste. No, there are other ways of socialising and I definitely don't need alcohol to enjoy myself, you can easily have fun when you're siber, but it's also fun sometimes just to have a drink and get a bit giggly and tipsy. I've never been so wasted that I start throwing up all over the floor and things, I get "merry", as my mum puts it. It's a fun place to be without making you lose control of yourself or doing stupid things. But no, you don't need alcohol to have fun, nor do you need to abstain completely. Also, people are much nicer to me when they're drunk. That's really it, people who are shy/awkward don't worry so much when they've been drinking. I was adamant I hated the taste of alcohol and that I didn't want to drink at parties and things, but I found a few drinks I like the taste of, so I like having them now and then. I guess people just like alcohol as confidence in a bottle.

I don't know, it's not half as good as most illegal buzzes you can get.

This is such a typical TSR question.

You have to go and experience it to understand.

Yes, there are other ways of socialising, and I do them as well, they aren't mutually exclusive. You don't have to drink loads and loads to feel more confident, all it takes is a pint or two and people will be louder and more sociable.

I don't like coffee, and its hard to explain, but going out for a pint with a few friends is a different experience to going out for a lemonade.

For alcohol to lower your inhibitions don't you have to get drunk? But you forget about it afterwards, and if being more "free to be yourself" involves damaging your liver and losing fantastic or regretful memories, doesn't it seem like a waste of time and money. Is it hindering people to look for more long-term ways of being carefree and having fun?
