How much clothes did you bring to uni ?
Discussion for current and prospective students about social life at university, societies, what stationery and bedroom items to buy and anything else relating to life as a university student.

Re: How much clothes did you bring to uni ?
When you first arrive in September it may be just about two suitcases full - on what ever you like depending on what activites you plan on doing. ( Tip: take lots of hoodies for going to lectures and underwear)
It also depends if youll be doing shopping whilst youre there ?
And be mindful, as the weather gets colder you will need to bring or buy more warmer clothes. -
Re: How much clothes did you bring to uni ?
I didn't take nearly enough with me when I first went. I think the reason for this is that I had a uniform at school, and then worked weekends and a couple of evenings when I was at school, moving to full-time during holidays. This meant I never really took into account that I would need a massive amount of 'casual' clothing (for lectures, etc.) than I had before. I was fine for clothes to wear going out and stuff, because I'd always had stuff for that, but I think you need to consider that you'll need more clothes than you had at school.

Re: How much clothes did you bring to uni ?
I was thinking that I'll leave my winter coat because it's pretty thick and awkward to pack, and maybe leave my dresses and formal (interview) wear because they're rarely worn but I don't trust British weather. I'm taking all of my clothes because for all I know, it could be boiling in October or snowing in the first week >:| and I'm going to take my formal stuff in the slight hope that I'll be able to get a job.
Also, the comment about wearing all of their clothes, thanks for the idea! Wear ALL the layers! -
Re: How much clothes did you bring to uni ?
I think I'm gonna take stuff by season, e.g. not take too much summer clothes in the first term/semester as it will be getting colder. Then obviously won't need many summer clothes from Jan-March/April either. Coats can take up a lot of space too so I might only take one in the last term? I guess I'll just have to see.

Re: How much clothes did you bring to uni ?
i've already started shopping for ****loads of clothes already! at uni, this is what i'm thinking:
- 10+ T-Shirts
- 2 smart buttoned long sleeved shirts
- 5 pairs of shoes
- 4 jeans
- 4 shorts
- 2 joggers
- 2 hoodie type jackets
- 3 hoodies
- couple of jumpers
- one big winter trench coat (oh they look so smart in the winter
) + with the scalves
also, the more clothes you bring, less trips to the laundry

Re: How much clothes did you bring to uni ?
I'm just going to pack for 1 season (autumn) and maybe a few summer things incase we get miracle weather. As I only live an hour away from the uni I'm going to so I can at a push go home and get stuff If i need it. However I'll still end up over packing and I have no idea how big the wardrobes are

btw, you mentioned that last winter was so warm that you was still wearing shorts - what uni do you go to? -
By all means have a clear out of stuff you don't want, and leave suits etc...if you don't plan on getting a job or anything (although they're useful for balls and stuff) but you're going to be living at uni for 8-12 weeks or so, not going on holiday for a week, so you need the same clothes you live on normally.
Tale advantage of the lift up to get everything up, uni is your more permanent home than 'home', so you should be thinking more about how much to take home for a couple of weeks at Christmas/Easter etc...so that you have a manageable suitcase for the train (if that's how you're travelling).
That's all unless you're planning on going home every weekend or something -
Re: How much clothes did you bring to uni ?do you really need a suit ready for finding a part time job at uni? what if it's in a supermarket, an independent retailer? smart trousers, shoes, shirt and tie would do right? (i've never been interviewed for any jobs/unis so i'm not too sure..)(Original post by heyimbored)

Re: How much clothes did you bring to uni ?i've already had arguments (not full blown out of control arguments ofc!) with my parents haha, they even believe that ONE or two pair of "good shoes" would do for uni(Original post by Alt__x)
I'm planning on bringing most of my clothes, I'm worried its not going to fit in my wardrobe! I can tell there are going to be arguments with my parents about the amount of clothes I'm planning on taking up.
(well for me it wouldn't)

Not necessarily for part time jobs, no, but internships and such may be more formal, at least to 'shirt and suit trousers' level. Like I said as well, there are always summer/winter balls and smart themed nights out where you might want it or parts of it.(Original post by thelawstudent)

Think of it this way though, even if you don't think you'll use it, are you more likely to use it at uni where you're going to be having these balls and interviews, or at home, where you go to relax in the holidays? -
Re: How much clothes did you bring to uni ?
I took WAY too much. Basically my entire wardrobe. I had to bring in two extra sets of drawers and cabinets from home and threw all my hoodies in a massive pile on top of wardrobe and only then did everything JUST fit. Although my entire floor was also a floordrobe. Luckily my roommate was the same or she may have killed me.
As I was packing up from uni (took 2 trips in the car to fit everything) I counted 35 dresses. Most of them never worn. The rest of my clothes... well, I would have enough to wear a different outfit every day for the entire year. The only reason I did washing three times in the year is because I ran out of pants.
Next year I am bringing about a quarter of what I did. -
Re: How much clothes did you bring to uni ?
Well it also helps to bear in mind how far you are traveling and your hall contract.
If you have to move out in the holidays then it wouldn't make sense to bring clothes for every season.
I remember volunteering in freshers week and a girl moving into the oldest building's 4th floor with so much stuff (mainly clothes) it took 4+ volunteers 3-4+ trips to move her stuff by the stairs as there are just 2 lifts and they were very busy.
Anyway...that hall you have to move out in the holidays as they rent them out.
She must of included a whole year's worth otherwise i hate to think how big her wardobe at home was. Also i saw labels (so they were new) on a lot of her stuff and she had a lot of it just on hangers.
