Why don't people give money to tramps?
I am not going to preach to you guys about how I give money to tramps and others don't blah blah blah....
I give money to tramps sometimes and sometimes I don't, I was talking to a friend about it and he was very casual about how he never feels guilty or anything. So I have been asking the question "Why don't you give money to tramps?" and I have been getting a lot of odd responses ranging from we are in a recession to they'll probably spend it on drugs and alcohol.
However I got one very honest response from someone who said that they felt it made them "a more important person" and that it finally gave him some control. Personally I think it's really vain, but it got me wondering since we are online and everybody is anonymous does anybody else feel the same way or has a really controversial opinion? -

Re: Why don't people give money to tramps?I used to occasionally when i lived in a city. They say most people are only 6 months away from homelessness, i don't see the point in looking down on them. And im not arsed if they spend it on booze.

Re: Why don't people give money to tramps?
As I was growing up I was always taught that tramps carry AIDS and AIDS can jump up to 7 metres. I always make sure that if I do give money I throw it from a distance into the tramp's vicinity. If I only have notes I will wait until the wind is blowing favourably in their direction and release a £5 note into the air from at least 10 metres away.

Re: Why don't people give money to tramps?
Because whenever I'm in the city (where the tramps are) I have stuff to do and I don't want to run out of change for things like vending machines. I occasionally do give though, but never to people who come up to me in the street because they might try and nick my wallet.

Re: Why don't people give money to tramps?
When homeless people have asked me for money I've said no, and have bought them a coffee instead before.
Once, when I came out from a club one night with my friends, there was a homeless man outside begging. He said to me that he was so hungry, and did I have any change? I said no, but I'll go over to this burger van which was 20m away and buy him a burger or some chips though. Then he promptly refused and said, "oh no, I cant stomach that sort of stuff...".
So anyone who thinks it's me being ignorant and snobby when I say they'll just spend it on alcohol or drugs, here is my case ^Last edited by Pwhiskers; 30-06-2012 at 20:02. -

id never give money to tramps just as there couldbe a possibility they will spend it on drugs, i would be much more comfortable going to the shop and buying them some food to give them -

I have done before now, just depends if I can spare it.Ok they might spend it on drugs or booze, but hey.I was in town yesterday and saw a homeless man asleep on the pavement not far from a McDonalds.Someone had placed a McDonalds bag and a drink by him so that he had something to eat and drink when he woke up.I thought that was a really nice thing to do.

Re: Why don't people give money to tramps?I don't give to beggers because they will most likely spend it on drugs and alcohol. You're much better giving to a charity who help the homeless.(Original post by zakkaz)

Re: Why don't people give money to tramps?
It's my money. We live in a stable society with social welfare facilities to which billions of people can only dream of having recourse, yet people still end up homeless.
I'm fully conscious that not everyone ends up homeless by choice (e.g., abusive families), but I still cannot expunge the feeling that, in many cases, their circumstances are a product of a series of bad decisions they have made in life. In any case, virtually all of the homeless people I've seen look relatively healthy; i.e., they don't look emaciated or on the verge of death, so that also influences my viewpoint. If they were that desperate, they would commit a crime so they have a place to stay and something to eat.
It's callous and I would obviously hate it if I were in that position, but that's just my take on the situation.
