Things to do OTHER than clubbing?
Discussion for current and prospective students about social life at university, societies, what stationery and bedroom items to buy and anything else relating to life as a university student.

Yeah I know what you mean, and unless you have weird flatmates then they'll definitely spend plenty of nights in the flat instead of going out. Clubbing can be expensive, after all.
I'd love staying in and having drinks, it's so relaxed and funny

Hello
Are you at Nottingham or Nottingham Trent? I'm starting at Nottingham this year (grades providing) and am really worried because I've just found out I've got to be teetotal for the rest of my life (health related). Do you find that not drinking has a big affect on the people you hang out with and the stuff that you do?
I'm at Uni of Nottingham.
Personally, I do drink, but I'm not a big clubbing fan - I'll go clubbing probably once or twice a month when it's somebody's birthday or whatnot.
In terms of people I hang round with, it will have some effect, I'm not going to lie. There are students who will go out 3 nights a week every week, but then they're often not the type of people I'm likely to make friends with even if I did go clubbing more often. You'll find that most students will settle in a bit more in 2nd year and go out less anyway.
In first year I made plenty of friends in halls, through societies and clubs, and on my course. Plus, you get to know people through friends quite easily. Despite there being 35,000 students in UoN, you'll probably not be more than 3 connections away from almost everyone!
I'd say I made most friends through societies and clubs, and through friends of friends. We go to Mooch, the SU bar, quite often (and a lot of clubs/societies will go there for socials), but nobody bats an eyelid at whether you're drinking alcohol or not
So all in all, I'd say very little effect!

Re: Things to do OTHER than clubbing?Haha yep, it was Cadbury World in my first year; I think that's continued for the past 2 years but I'm not 100%(Original post by sliceofcake)
Nottingham University?
Immediate regret at not making that my firm choice
If you're serious about changing, you can normally do so! http://www.ucas.ac.uk/students/offer.../replying/faq8

Re: Things to do OTHER than clubbing? Thanks for your reply, that's reassuring to hear! I suppose at such a large place and with two universities in the city everyone's pretty much bound to meet a group of people they've got stuff in common with!(Original post by DarkWhite)

I hope it's not like where I live at the moment and where I went to college, where it seems like everyone talks about how drunk they were etc. To be fair, it's only bothered me since I haven't been able to drink - I guess I'd get used to it either way!Last edited by sammy-lou; 30-06-2012 at 22:24. -
Re: Things to do OTHER than clubbing?
I'm not a clubbing fan either, but to be honest I found that when I started uni I was just so excited to be meeting so many new people that pre drinks often led to a great night anyway. Now I'm going into my third year I'm happy to just go to the pubs around my area and then a club once in a while if I fancy it. There'll be plenty of other people like you but to begin with, just relax and go with the flow!

Not sure Winchester has one? Well, Southampton, I presume that's where people go for their nights out there.(Original post by placebo24)
If you hate dance music go to a rock club?

Re: Things to do OTHER than clubbing?Do many universities offer many non-alcoholic events or is it rare?(Original post by DarkWhite)
Do you have a Freshers' Week timetable/programme yet?
In Notts we offer plenty of non-alcoholic events, especially in the past few years.
We have day trips to Alton Towers/Cadbury World, pub quizzing, Binglo, Freshers' Fair for 3 days, sports, city/campus tours, film screenings, hypnotists and stacks more.
Find out from Winchester if they do the same

Re: Things to do OTHER than clubbing?I think most universities/students' unions now realise that they have more to cater for than big nights out, and a social responsibility to offer something else(Original post by dattru)

I can't speak on behalf of other unis though! -
Re: Things to do OTHER than clubbing?
For the Fresher week you just come and meet new people cause that is where you make first few friends, they might be in your course or not but that is one of the way to expand your social networking.
, Maybe you might meet people who have the same taste as you doesnt like clubbing. You could go around the campus to have a look at the building, go around the city that you will be studying there.

Re: Things to do OTHER than clubbing?Alright, thank you for the answer though(Original post by DarkWhite)

Re: Things to do OTHER than clubbing?
Not all clubbing is bad ... depends on what sort of music you're into (dance, indie, hip-hop etc ) ... you never know you might actually like it.
If not then pubbing, going to other peoples kitchens/halls, cinema, dining, a sport of some kind I mean there is lots to do you just have to find what you like doing and I’m sure they’ll be a group of people who love doing the same thing too.
I'd love staying in and having drinks, it's so relaxed and funny
