Re: Does Medicine become boring?Yeah one of my GPs is an ex ENT surgeon - so it all depends I guess(Original post by Happydude)
I did work experience with one GP that had previously been an orthopaedic surgeon. He said he switched to GP as it was a much more varied specialty when compared to orthopaedics, which he eventually found boring as he only ever did a few different operations.
I honestly think whether or not you find it boring is all down to your personality and picking the specialty which suits you most. That GP is one of the happiest guys I've met now! -
Re: Does Medicine become boring?Yeah, on work experience a couple of years ago I met an orthopaedic surgeon, whose variety of surgery was so specialised (limited?(Original post by Philosoraptor)
Yeah one of my GPs is an ex ENT surgeon - so it all depends I guess
), that she basically only did one specific type of operation - and no, not even on both limbs; only the left bloody foot!
So I guess it all comes down to choosing monotony (if you could call it that) vs. efficiency

Re: Does Medicine become boring?
I'm sure medicine can get boring. I'm a bit bored of some of it already and I'm not even qualified yet.
But I think one of the best things about medicine is that you have so many opportunities to create variety for yourself. Even if you only perform one specialist left foot operation, you still get variety by spending some time in theatre, time in the clinic, and time on the ward. You will still meet lots of different patients and work with lots of different colleagues. You can do some teaching/research/management to keep things interesting. And as some others have mentioned, you might even be able to switch speciality. There are lots of opportunities for travelling and doing work abroad. The opportunity to do so many extra interesting things if you're day to day work isn't enough to excite you is one of the main things that made me go to medical school.

Re: Does Medicine become boring?
it all depends on you. i had a tiny insight into medicine during work experiences but for me it was enough to ensure i chose the right course. Of course i only saw the precious moments of medicine and it is by far not as glorious as it seemed but i acknowledge the cons and appreciate them but it has not detered me from my choice.

Re: Does Medicine become boring?
OK, looking at the previous responses i suppose i am answering the wrong question. i will hopefully be starting medicine this sep/oct. I personally think that all jobs get boring but Medicine is one of the most exciting. Constantly faced with new challenges and yes some of the stereotypical scenarios but is any job perfect, only perfect for you.
