How to sort out the welfare system
It's actually pretty easy to sort out the welfare system if someone had the balls.
At the moment a person who is about to claim has two choices:
-Work and pay tax
-Do nothing and claim benefits
If we gave the the following options:
-Work and pay tax
-Do (menial/community/i-dont-care-so-long-as-it-requires-effort-and-getting-up-early-every-morning) work to merit the benefits you will receive
this provides a deterrent to claiming benefits on a whim. Its also fair that work/effort is made in return for benefits.
Why give somebody something for nothing, when we can make them do something to receive free money???
Now all we need to do is decide what work. Personally I couldnt care what, so long as it simulates a 9 to 5 job and the amount of effort people who pay their benefits (taxpayers) have to do. -
Re: How to sort out the welfare systemWhy? I can think of plenty of work an elderly person can do sitting down at a table.(Original post by SpiggyTopes)
Yes, but with obvious exceptions such as the ill and elderly.
RE "ill": Unless somebody is genuinely retarded, then I would expect all people to have to do this.
Single mums could put their children into state-sponsored creches, funded by reduced numbers of people wanting the cushty benefit lifestyle. -

Elaborate and I will
You telling me a pregnant woman cannot sit at a table and do work?
Or are you asking me how to stop the underclass having kids?

Re: How to sort out the welfare system
I actually have some sympathy with a plan like this.
I'm not sure how it's any nicer for unemployed people to sit on their arses watching Jeremy Kyle/Bargain Hunt/Cash in the Attic (delete according to taste) than it is to have some sort of work. This could be public works like roadbuilding or something like talking to people in old folks homes. I think we need to get rid of this idea that you sit about doing nothing just because you're unemployed.
There would of course need to be significant time devoted to identifying what people want to do and helping them apply for, or gain the skills to do, these jobs. -
Re: How to sort out the welfare system
So your premise to help rectify any possible unfairness about benefits and their claimants who are unable or wont get jobs is to..... give them jobs.
Can't you see the irony in what you're proposing? If we did find something for a benefit claimant to do, it would either be useless and would just be done for the sakes of making them do something, which is just plain wrong as humans aren't circus animals or it would be something useful, which constitutes an actual job and would render them getting benefits as non existent anyway, as they'd be properly employed.
So your scheme is dumb, as will be your refusal to admit that you were wrong if you were reply to this with adamant and defensive tones. -

Re: How to sort out the welfare system
Any type of workfare scheme have 2 big problems.
1. Its cheaper for employers to make paid workers redundant and "re-employ" them for next to nothing on workfare so makes unemployment worse.
2. If people on workfare do useless jobs designed to humiliate or equate them to criminals doing community service, it will cost a lot to manage them and they will do the worse job they can get away with. -
Re: How to sort out the welfare systemExcept with a very high crime rate like India and Brazil where the better off live behind steel doors and the poor live in shatty towns where drugs dealers run the place and corrupt nearly all the police and politicians.(Original post by Herr)
Cancel all benefits, halt immigration bar the most skilled and wealthy, things would improve. Plenty of countries have no unemployment benefits and hand out minimal disability benefits, they get on just fine.Last edited by Maker; 01-07-2012 at 08:50. -
