Mechanical Engineering
Hello, I am about to start Mechanical Engineering course at University of Nottingham and I've got some questions:
Firstly, I propably missed my MEng offer. Is it possible to transfer from BEng to MEng after say 2nd year, as long as I will get certain grade?
Secondly, I'd like to know if, and what programming language we'll be studying at this course? I'd love to have got more than 1 option after graduation, so I'd like to self teach Java/C++ . What language do you recommend?
Many thanks! -
Re: Mechanical Engineering
C languages are more likely to be taught during an engineering degree (based on the uni's I looked at anyway) and are more likely to be relevant to engineering based jobs.
Java I think is slightly more straight forward (according to my housemate who is doing CS) and gives you a good understanding of the logic behind programming in general, allowing you to move onto other languages more quickly. -
Re: Mechanical EngineeringMany thanks! Also I'd like to know if there is a chance to pursue java/c++ developer career after mechanical engineering degree?(Original post by Keckers)

Re: Mechanical EngineeringI'm sure there will be, however you will likely need far greater experience in programming than will be offered to you in the engineering degree. So you'll be needing to do a lot of extra work on top of the degree.(Original post by Dreamester)
Many thanks! Also I'd like to know if there is a chance to pursue java/c++ developer career after mechanical engineering degree?
However, if you want to be competitive in a job market mainly filled with computer science students you are going to need a pretty substantial portfolio of work and experience in development. -
Re: Mechanical EngineeringFor engineering maths related purposes: Fortran(Original post by Dreamester)

For other fun and serious stuff: C/C++ -
Re: Mechanical EngineeringI think that find work experience in web development is a little bit easier than mechanical engineering so I will try, thank you! I think I will go with Java and then C++ (got 5 years to learn both, hope will be enough)(Original post by Keckers)

Re: Mechanical EngineeringI know that they almost consider MEng and BEng students on the same course for the first two years as they are both the same.(Original post by Dreamester)

Then at the end of 2nd year, if you're getting an average of...I think it's 60% or above, you get invited onto the MEng course and if you're below that you're put onto the BEng course. -
Re: Mechanical EngineeringNo matter if you're on MEng or BEng ? That would be really nice!(Original post by helen-a-ravenclaw)

Re: Mechanical EngineeringThat's my understanding of the matter.(Original post by Dreamester)
No matter if you're on MEng or BEng ? That would be really nice!
It's pretty common through different unis and it makes sense really.
It seems fairer its about how you do on the course, not your a-level results. -
Re: Mechanical EngineeringAnyone with 55% of above across the first 2 years can take the MEng if they like, even if they began on the BEng. Also if you start on the MEng, they will kick you off if you get below the 55%, so whatever you start on it doesn't matter.(Original post by Dreamester)

Computer programming modules take place in year 2 and onwards, I just finished first year, so I know absolutely nothing about the programming languages you're on about - but we do learn some!
