Can any TSR scientists tell us what this actually means for humanity/the world?Last edited by Lord-Voldemort; 01-07-2012 at 14:56. -
Re: Higgs boson 'God Particle' has been found by CERN
Actually, no one has said they have found the higgs boson, just that they might have.
The reason there so keen to find it is because it is the only particle that hasn't been discovered which supports one of the main theories that modern physics is based on.
It clearly states, they will make an announcement, doesn't say about what.Last edited by OSharp; 01-07-2012 at 14:55. -
Re: Higgs boson 'God Particle' has been found by CERN
They haven't found it yet. It's not official.
Scientists from Cern will announce on Wednesday whether the tantalising "hints" of the Higgs Boson which they presented in December have been strengthened or grown weaker over the past six months.
Although the results may not be strong enough to declare an official discovery, they are rumoured to show very similar signals to those announced last year which back up the previous findings.
...
Cern has urged the public not to believe the rumours, insisting that its physicists are still poring over months' worth of data and the full picture will not be clear even to them until early next week. -

Re: Higgs boson 'God Particle' might have been found by CERNHow are you so certain?(Original post by OG-Ashley)
they haven't found it nor will they ever find it because it doesn't exist. -
Re: Higgs boson 'God Particle' might have been found by CERNYou can't know that it doesn't exist, you have no proof and there is no certain way to say for sure. It may exist and if it does, CERN will find it.(Original post by OG-Ashley)

Re: Higgs boson 'God Particle' might have been found by CERNThe importance of the Higgs Boson is that its discovery would validate the standard model of Physics.(Original post by Lord-Voldemort)

However, don't be expecting the potential discovery of the particle to suddenly change the face of the world into something out of science fiction. The discovery would undoubtedly have practical applications of some kind but I doubt anyone of us understand it enough to make any kind of prediction as to what these applications might be. -
Re: Higgs boson 'God Particle' might have been found by CERN
Does it even matter if it's found?
It's not a theoretical break through, just a confirmation of something we already suspect. That isn't going to lead to large technological development, because we already have the working theories and have those related techs.
If anything I would prefer it not to be found and the answer to be some other model of physics, the discovery of which may offer us even more technologies.
Obsession over the particle is just journalistic mutual masturbation. -
Re: Higgs boson 'God Particle' might have been found by CERNi guess it means they can experiment with it? not a physicist myself but if someone predicted dinosaurs and we found dinosaurs, it would open doors for more breakthroughs as we can examine what we've found. The fact that we confirmed dinosaurs exist change nothing but what we can find out with them is another thing(Original post by RyanT)
