What tablet to buy for sixth form?
I am starting sixth form in september and i am looking into buying a tablet. I will be studying English, Media,Photography and Art. I am looking at the IPad 2, Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy Tab but i am unsure if i am looking at the right ones? What tablets do you guys have? And i do have a laptop at home but i need one that can use internet on its own not through the schools wifi. I have been saving for a long time so money aint a problem and how much data (GB) would i need to support my work?
Thanks

Re: What tablet to buy for sixth form?
Time and time again the iPad is shown to be the supreme tablet, but I would recommend you try out each of the different models you're considering anyway, just so you can get a feel of them all. Shops like HMV, Curries and PC World usually have them out for you to have a play around on. Shop assistants should be able to advise you as well.
1GB would be plenty enough a month, I'm almost certain. You would only need more than that if you watched or downloaded loads and loads of videos since videos use up the most memory. General things like opening web pages only takes a small amount of kilobytes. And remember, kilobytes go into megabytes which then go into the gigabytes (1000MB is 1GB), so using kilobytes is nothing.
The iPad is your safest bet, but like I say, go and try the models out which you're considering; you might find the Samsung Galaxy Tablet or the Nexus 7 Tablet is more to your liking. Read up about them all online as well so you can see all their capabilities, and what customer reviews for them are like.Last edited by Globox; 01-07-2012 at 17:19. -

If you want to buy a tablet buy one, but do not make it as if you NEED it for your studies. You don't. -
Re: What tablet to buy for sixth form?Actually my sixth form has said that a tablet is a good way to study my subjects as we do a lot of self study and I know it will work for me. I am not making out it is the be all and end all of my studies but I know it will help. It may not have helped you but it is the way I learn.(Original post by jaadau121)

Thank you to the others that have commented I will go down to pc world and speak to someone there I think the iPad will be the safest bet

How exactly will a tablet help, you won't be doing anything related to art or photography on a tablet, you will need photoshop.
That leaves English and Media, so how will it help, teh college is misleading you. -
Re: What tablet to buy for sixth form?
You don't need a tablet.
It is entirely up to you what kind of tablet you want (tautology lol) because they have their different strengths and weaknesses.
The iPad is the king of apps and usability. It has iTunes U going for it aswell.
The Samsung Galaxy tab is a funky piece of kit, though I don't know much about it. It also has flash which might be a deal breaker for you, open source software is also pretty cool and open to lots of customisation.
The Nexus 7 is smaller and more akin to the Kindle fire. Its more portable, makes a good E-reader. Its also cheaper!

You don't need one for college. All you need is a bag for your books, a pen and some paper.

Re: What tablet to buy for sixth form?
I got an iPad 2 16GB just before I started Sixth Form. You don't need a tablet for your studies, no matter how much you convince yourself you will (I'm speaking from experience... haha), but I can definitely say it's been a lot nicer carrying my iPad around to type basic word documents up on and view powerpoints on in class than it would've been with a laptop...
Personally I find the 16GB plenty because I have a 32GB ipod that has all my music and films, so I use my iPad for apps to help with maths, mind-maps, simple word processing, powerpoints and web browsing.
The huge advantage I like about the iPad are the iBook store and the Kindle apps, which have definitely been helpful in terms of some extra reading (or chill-out reading). History textbooks are plenty on there, and there are a few English related things too. Then there's also 'iTunes U'. I take English Language and recently discovered some great linguistics resources on iTunes U that'll be helping me out with my Language Investigation coursework this year. - Honestly, I think these features are possibly the main benefit of a tablet.
I can't speak much about the Nexus or Galaxy tab... From what I've read the Galaxy seems pretty nice, but I wouldn't swap my iPad for it. -
Re: What tablet to buy for sixth form? It's hilarious. What does someone plan to achieve academically with a device designed for multimedia?(Original post by DeathByBSOD)

iPads are impractical. Give me one feature which justifies spending AT LEAST £400 for one. (since you're stuck without expandable storage) They are large, heavy and are essentially just over-sized iPods. iOS is restrictive and lacks many features which Google's OS has. It's a toy for children, and is not cost effective at all. I bought one for testing and swiftly returned it within a week. It can't even do half of the stuff my phone can do, it's too heavy and the screen is prone to damage.(Original post by eimmas)

The only tablet which I could justify buying is the upcoming Nexus 7. -
iPad, hands down. I've got a 16gb WiFi 3rd Gen iPad which is perfect as a cloud device. I also have a 160gb classic so I don't need to store music on it and I generally use my mac for TV and films. However when traveling, it can easily take a few films. If you want to have lots of media all the time, you will NEED at least a 32gb model or 64gb if you can stretch to it.
I'm personally looking into the Seagate GoFlex Satellite 500GB wireless HDD for iPad, but it is pricey.

Honestly I don't think they're impractical or too heavy. And how on earth you can say "the screen is prone to damage" is beyond me, because if you're careless with anything then it's going to be prone to damage... I'd like to hear your justification for that statement really.
Fair enough, you prefer the Nexus, I'm not going to dismiss that opinion. -
Re: What tablet to buy for sixth form? Please provide me with just one example as to what an iPad does that can justify its hefty price tag. It's prone to damage because it does not have any scratch-resistant glass, (such as Corning Gorilla Glass) place yours under a bright light and you might be surprised by what you see.(Original post by eimmas)

Re: What tablet to buy for sixth form?
Remember guys it is not a replacement for my laptop I still have one at home but it is too heavy and bulky to carry around all day. I never said I needed a tablet I just said I was looking into them and with anything you buy it is likely to break if you mistreat it. It will help with art as I can draw images off of the tablet from anywhere instead of carrying around lots of paper. I cant always get on a computer at school and so I am looking into buying one. IT IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR MY LAPTOP AND I HAVE ONE AT HOME. I want one for portability and internet access and I will buy the required cases and screen protectors. Can I please have an answer to my question instead of people telling me that I should not buy one
Thanks
