Re: Should the national anthem be changed? Not British, but I find it strange that the national anthem of a country should be about a person, the Queen. You can simultaneously love Britain and have no love for the Queen so I think GSTQ should only be sung at Royal events. Why not Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory which seem much more relevant.(Original post by ukip72)
Personally I still favour God save the Queen.
Britain is so much more than the Royal Family.Last edited by Zürich; 01-07-2012 at 16:57. -
Re: Should the national anthem be changed?
Maybe, I still like it but it seems a lot less relevant now and most people don't quite seem to 'get it'? What would/could we even change it to?
EDIT: Just saw you posted some ideas in the poll which I overlooked. How embarassing
I went for God Save the Queen anyway.Last edited by Endless Blue; 01-07-2012 at 16:57. -
Re: Should the national anthem be changed? Is Jerusalem not an English rather than British song, and therefore not appropriate for the union?(Original post by ninuzu)
Jerusalem. -
Re: Should the national anthem be changed?Jerusalem is English, not British. God forbid any more promotion of having picnics in the countryside while public sector workers do some retard dance becomes 'British culture', like this shambles of an Olympic opening ceremony seems to want to be. True, what I like about England, no the UK, is the green and pleasant land. But who runs around dressed as Mount Everest if the Olympics went to China or Nepal.(Original post by Zürich)

Re: Should the national anthem be changed?
I actually quite like God Save the Queen. It's simple yet noble and properly done can send chills down your spine, it's that good.
There's nothing that requires a national anthem to be specifically about a country, either. A national anthem is simply a song the nation rallies round; moreover the monarch is the symbol that the nation rallies round, so it is sensible that the song celebrates the symbol.
After all, the US anthem sings about the flag. -
Re: Should the national anthem be changed?I've never really understood the reason behind this as clearly "Jerusalem wasn't builded here"(Original post by ninuzu)
Ok, Jerusalem should be the English national anthem, as England just use the British one currently. Scotland, Wales, N Ireland should keep theirs and God save the queen/land of hope and glory the british one. -
Re: Should the national anthem be changed?
I don't see why. It's just the way it is, and there's a rich history associated with it. Having said that, it has got me thinking about what will happen after the Queen. At the moment, plenty do have respect for her, and following on from that, the Royal Family - but once we no longer have the Queen, I'm unsure as to the fate of the Royal Family in general, and therefore the national anthem too, I guess.

Re: Should the national anthem be changed?
My vote would be to keep God Save the Queen, not so much because I think it's better than the alternatives you've posted but simply because if it was to be changed you'd have all the minority interest groups arguing that it shouldn't promote this, that or the other. For starters you can guarantee it wouldn't feature religion or the monarchy. Any replacement would inevitably be utterly bland and uninspiring.

Re: Should the national anthem be changed?
but surely Jerusalem has little place as a British or English national anthem since religion does not play a major part in most peoples everyday life, a song about the idea the that Jesus once visited England ... its a nice song/poem but not really a national anthem, i vow to thee my country maybe... but again quite tied in with religion.
