    Confused about grade requirements
    Hello!

I am looking at what modules are available to study at university of St Andrews, as I am starting the university this fall. The grade requirements however make me slightly confused (I am an international student, and not used to the A / AS level grades).

The mathematics course requires B at Advanced Higher Mathematics or B at A-*‐Level Mathematics. I got a 5 in HL maths at the IB, will that be sufficient?

Hope you can help me out

Applying to St Andrews - Typical Asking Rates

Mathematics at St Andrews is very popular and we receive over 10 applications per place. We seek to recruit students who are not only enthusiastic about Mathematics but also possess the potential to be successful. We cannot offer all applicants a place but every application we receive is considered on merit.

Below are listed typical grades required for entry.
These are offered as a guide only.
    SQA Higher qualifications
AAAB in Highers with an A grade in Higher Mathematics.

For entry to the four year "fast track" MMath programme a grade B in Advanced Higher Maths plus one further B (or equivalent).

For Direct Entry to Second Year (3 year BSc or 4 year MMath) grades of AA at Advanced Higher including AH Maths.
    A level qualifications
AAA with A in Mathematics for standard first year or "fast track" MMath entry.

For Direct Entry into second year of our BSc (reducing the 4 year programme to 3) or MMath programmes (reducing the 5 year programme to 4) we seek AAA with As in both Mathematics and Further Mathematics.

    International Baccalaureate
A total score of 36 points with 6 in Higher Level Mathematics for standard first year or "fast track" MMath entry.

So, I'm not entirely sure either. If you're only doing a module in maths I think that a HL 5 shouild be sufficient provided you get 36 points overall. However, for the maths course a 5 in HL might not be enough. E-mail them to clarify it

    Thank you for your answer!

I have read that part, but it is only for the mathematics module, not the course. But thank you again, I think I will email them as you suggested

I've moved this to the St Andrews forum where you can get help from people who understand the system there.

5 HL Maths should be fine for the 1000 level modules. Should be fine for 1002, anything higher you would have enough mathematical grounding to take on the modules.

If you have the chance, dont bother taking 1001, its a waste of time. Go straight into 1002.
