Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary.
Basically, I want to start doing gameplay commentaries and reviews for my youtube channel.
I'm going to start on nintendo 64 games mostly, so the first I wish to start is a walkthrough/commentary of Goldeneye.
I have a few questions and hopefully require some tips to make this a success:
In your opinion what makes a good video game commentary?
Are there any things is hould avoid?
Can youtube take down any of my videos if they have video game audio / visual content on it?
Can I activate advertising with video game audio visual content?
Which do people prefer, video game commentaries or video game reviews?
I'm fairly new to the forums, so if i've done anything wrong in one of my first posts, do let me know.
thanks.
p.s. i shall be posting a video of me playing Dam on goldeneye later on, my youtube channel is /munnawar if anyone wants to see what kind of level i am at when making a video of that sort.
Thanks ! -
Re: Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary.
In your opinion what makes a good video game commentary?
Clear mic, not too many pauses, enthusiastic, informative, knowledgable
Are there any things is hould avoid?
Opposite of above :P Don't just describe the gameplay, talk about something else. Perhaps do different series, talk about different things.
Can youtube take down any of my videos if they have video game audio / visual content on it?
They won't if the game is fully released but the rules are pretty complicated.
Can I activate advertising with video game audio visual content?
You can't get ads straight away, after a while they might offer you adsense but you cannot put this on top of video game footage. For that you will need a partnership - the most simple/worse ones require around 1k views a day (obviously it's different for each network)
Which do people prefer, video game commentaries or video game reviews?
Personally, commentaries. Each to their own
If you want me to clear something up or you have any other questions quote me, hope this shed some light

Re: Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary.
I'm hoping to get some gameplay videos up to be done similar to this:

Re: Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary.I'm a huge fan of the Tobuscus (toby turner) video game walkthroughs and commentaries, where he does his own version of the story and makes voices and silly noises throughout the commentaries, as though he is actual a character in the game! Check out his gaming videos if you haven't already, they're ace.(Original post by munnawar)

Re: Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary.
Have a clear mic. Don't be a negative Nancy that complains all the time in commentaries because it gets really boring and no one will appreciate your personality (unless you're just sad all the time).
You don't really have to worry about copyright right now. I think it's covered under fair use. You just need to be a bit more careful with your music choice (if you choose to use any).
Other than that, have fun

Re: Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary.Just avoid going off topic and start talking about others games (unless theres a valid connection), your personal life problems, your friends etc. Try to remain mature and dont make random silly noises. Are there any things is should avoid?
If you're playing a game that's over 10 years old, try to accept it's limitations and old school ideas. Don't say something like this in Doom for example, "omfg, how am I playing with these graphics.. i wanna throw a frag at these goons, but I cant! I rate this 4/10 overall".
They are a few things that bother me about game commentaries which I've experienced on youtube over the years. -
Re: Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary.Hey thanks for that bit of feedback... this is what i came up with it's a basic commentary of the first level of a well known game (Goldeneye) so i deal with it being an old game and i dont think i mug it off for being an old game too much xD(Original post by noggins)

Re: Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary.Didn't watch it in full but was a good commentary, only a few technical points: mic quality isn't great (if you're serious about this invest in something that will last) and the game volume was a tad loud especially at the beginning.(Original post by munnawar)

Hahaha brilliant <3
I had the same thoughts about that padlock and bungie jump when I first started playing it. I suppose a number of other gamers did aswell back then. No other games would let you shoot the locks off
If you keep shooting it on the floor it I think it eventually explodes, lol
I've recently played it on N64 myself and wondered why that green truck was so square.. I could have sworn it was curvier.. I mean it was possibly the best looking FPS for its day. ah well, that's time for you. -
Re: Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary. Thanks alot, yeah i've made a second video and am planning to upload that, I put down the volume as people have said it was a bit loud. I'm hoping the mic quality improved, this was a good quality mic but i left it in my bag during football and a couple of volleys to the "posts" later and it was in pieces but still functional =S(Original post by WilliamG)

Re: Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary.Yeah it's interesting going back tot this game and realising it doesn't look horrrrible.(Original post by noggins)

but i think they compensated by making EVERYTHING square... no circles.
pretty much everything explodes in that game... I've made a part two (level 2 facility) which i hope to upload tonight, and that has a few objects that explode which they wouldnt do in real life.
thanks alot man. -
Hey so I took on board what TSR peeps said hopefully part 2 is an improvement?
Ok so I made a video game commentary a couple days ago and posted it on the TSR forums. I got a bit of feedback which was great and i appreciated it. Here is the original video:
Part two was from the same game (goldeneye on the n64) but of the second level.
I want to know if people believe there's been a marked improvement? And if not if you had the time to provide me feedback i'd be dead greatful. If not no worries
I'm still new to this whole thing... and so the content may not be too great, i don't think it's too bad, but that's just me.
If you have the time to check it out, thanks =]. -
Re: Hey I need help in starting up gameplay commentary.
If this thread is still running, can someone help me with a problem?
I have a HD PVR and soon I will be going to University with a TV that has a HDMI input, is it possible to record with the HD PVR?
I've looked and I've seen that you need a converter which costs about £35-£40 but I found a cheaper alternative.

Will this work? I'm thinking that the HDMI will go into the TV then the components into the HD PVR, and your Xbox 360 HD cables. Help?
If you keep shooting it on the floor it I think it eventually explodes, lol
