Ideas for a Scandinavia trip?
Hello, long story short me and my two close friends would like to go on holiday to Scandinavia at the end of year 13, so we'll all be 18.
Malia etc doesn't really appeal to us, and one of my friends seems quite keen on Scandinavia, most probably because he's half Norwegian and has never visited, but in fairness it's always been a place that has interested me so I'm not exactly disappointed by the suggestion.
We know of course, that it's not a partying location, it's not exactly Las Vegas, it doesn't have the shopping facilities of New York or the climate of Dubai. Despite this, we think it would be a very interesting place to visit, a bit of sight seeing etc, and generally to experience the culture I suppose!
We were thinking Norway, Sweden and Denmark, but aren't really sure whereabouts to go. Granted I shall be doing a lot of research/reading over the next few months to try and plan something, a journey route, but I was wondering if anybody has visited that part of the world and if they could share any advice, pleasant or unpleasant! (the latter being equally as important, so please don't hold back!)
I realise this is a bit of an open ended question, but if anybody has any advice, places to visit, things to do, travel advice, it would be appreciated!
(as a rough guide, in terms of budgeting we'd be flying from the UK and back, though probably traveling by train or some other means in between the start and end, staying in relatively affordable hotels/hostels) -

Re: Ideas for a Scandinavia trip?
Yeah have heard that copenhagen in particular is a party place. Have you considered going via Amsterdam and getting the train in between places? You might as well go to Amsterdam while you're in that neck of the woods! And you could prob get a really cheap flight / ferry there

Re: Ideas for a Scandinavia trip?
I haven't been to anywhere in scandanavia but have researched it extensively and has been my to do list for a while. All the cities seem awesome, with a great mix of things to do/see. Plus scandanavian women
All major scandanavian cities are also Major party places too at weekends. Note as mentioned, expect to budget quite a bit-mainly for norway.
The trip probably advisable would be Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki. Ferry/Flight from Oslo to Copenhagen, Ferry/Flight to Stockholm, followed by a ferry to Helsinki from Stockholm. Booking the mode of transport will depend on price, which will depend on when you go.
If your a drinker, make sure get you stock up on duty frees-£10+pints in olso! I'd try and avoid trains in this part of the world you will usually be better off flying.
Yup Ive put forward the capitals of each country....there are other options available. Gotenberg, Christiana, etc all come with high recommendations.
But if I was to give you one place which probably beats all of those mentioned (based on research)....Iceland, particularly Reykjavík. Now that place sounds of the hook!!!! -

Do you mean Kristiansand?
Christiania has been known as Oslo since 1925
Also known as Freetown. It is in copenhagen but offers a different atmosphere/culture altogether i hear.

Re: Ideas for a Scandinavia trip? From what Ive heard/read the night life is crazier than other nordic places. And the culture unique (partly owing to the fact less tourists tend to go Iceland). Obviously just opinions though.(Original post by phiddy23)
What's so good about Reykjavic? (genuine Q not an insult to it)

Re: Ideas for a Scandinavia trip?It was indeed closed down, but believe issues were resolved in 2011.(Original post by phiddy23)
Also I think Christiania is pretty much completely closed down and empty now... not 100% sure
