Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?
I know that a lot of people are experiencing this, but it's seriously getting to me.
I've been trying for the past three months to get a job. I've applied to so many jobs; as soon as I'm aware of a vacancy, I always apply, but they never get to me.
I've gotten an interview ONCE, and even then they rejected me afterwards.
Whenever I start to feel discouraged, I always find some way to re-motivate myself, but it's happened so many times now that I just feel so hopeless.
I've got previous experience working in a retail store, volunteering at charities and at primary schools, and working at Pizza Hut. But no-one has ever gotten back to me, or emailed me. I've even called back a few, and they told me that they're "still processing the applications, and will get back to me". But they haven't, and it's been weeks, so I've just assumed that I've been unsuccessful yet again.
What makes it worse is that a couple of my friends have easily gotten jobs, simply by applying to a few and getting interviews instantly. They're always boasting about how they've got a lot of money to spend nowadays. I guess, as childish and pathetic as it sounds, it just seems unfair, seeing as I'm trying so hard.
I've gone around town, handing out my CV to nearly all stores, I've checked daily on Jobcentreplus and Indeed and Reed and InRetail and Monster...and it's just not working. I feel so washed out and useless. What can I do?

Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?
I've been trying for just over 2 years and I've only just had some luck, an interview tomorrow. Never had any opportunities and finally somebody is willingly to give me a chance; that somebody is McDonalds but nonetheless, let this be inspiring to an extent and be thankful that you've actually been employed.

Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?You worked in a retail store and Pizza Hut, so you have experiences. How comes your not working there? You also have volunteering work experiences, so that's a good sign.(Original post by ConstantlyStressed)

I am in the same position, I don't mind working minimum wage jobs, but even minimum wages jobs ain't easy to get.
Are you getting interviews? I am getting interviews, but haven't manage to find a job yet.
I been using the Jobcentre plus website as well, and been going to the job centre printing out job vacancies information, and looking at their job notice board. The jobcentre hasn't been that helpful. I would of though that the companies advertising for jobs at the job centre were more likely to recruit. They got loads of jobs advertising there, and when you apply, you don't hear anything back.
What's your CV like? Is it 1 or 2 pages? and contains all the relevant information?Last edited by GuyUK; 01-07-2012 at 18:52. -
Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?
I think it's awful that employers are not even getting back to applicants. I know they are snowed under and it's simply an indication of just how competitive the job market is but it still riles me.
Keep your chin up OP and don't let it effect your opinion of yourself- you are not defined by your employment record!! -
Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?Aw, good luck, you definitely deserve the job. I hope it goes well. I know, but I just feel like crap..surrounded by people who can't stop whining about how many interviews they've been offered. Makes me feel like a failure, you know?(Original post by Silver Aurora)

What type of work do yoU want and what have you been applying for?
Anything in restaurants, retail, receptionists/assistants. Anything for a student.
I've been applying to all Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Aldi and Morrisons jobs, including nearly ALL the retail stores. -
Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?Aha thanks. I know what you mean, not a nice experience but I just always remember that I am better than them at the end of the day; the fact I wouldn't boost to my friends would be evidence enough. I hope your search goes well!(Original post by ConstantlyStressed)

Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?It drives me mad, regardless. Thank you - hopefully all this hard work will pay off sooner or later.(Original post by CherryCherryBoomBoom)
Lots of us have this same problem - it's just the crap recession and job market's fault, not yours. There's not a lot you can really do but keep trying until you hopefully get something. -

I know, I don't understand either. What puzzles me is my friend - who has never worked before in her LIFE - just landed a job that pays remarkably well simply because her uncle works there. I guess it really is who you know rather than what you know
Exactly! Doesn't it drive you insane? I thought the job centre would be a lot more helpful than they actually were, which got on my nerves.
My CV's two pages long, just about. It's got my contact/personal info, my personal statement, my experiences, my education/qualifications, my skills, and what I intend to do in the future/my hobbies and interests. Is it missing something? -
Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?I'll try to look out for it. Thank you.(Original post by Ham22)
Have someone check your CV over. Isn't there a section in the forum that does this? -
Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?Maybe it's your CV? I mean sometimes people come in where I work and hand in a Cv that basically only contains contact details and their grades and I feel sorry that they dont have a chance in hell(Original post by ConstantlyStressed)

Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?It gets me a little angry when they don't get back to me. I wouldn't even mind if they rejected me; it's the fact that I've wasted time and effort filling out the lengthy applications, trying my best to look professional and friendly, and they just can't be bothered to reply.(Original post by Aramiss18)

I suppose so.

Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?I doubt that's what it is, because CV's maybe account for say 20% of all jobs, they normally have an online form and a few have CV's.(Original post by Moscardini)

Re: Why am I finding it incredibly difficult to get a job?I don't know where OP lives but I live in a smallish town and here it's done mostly by CV except for large chain stores, that said I work at a chain store and it's done by CV so it depends where they're applying(Original post by Mr Dangermouse)
