    Sunday trading hours!
Sunday trading laws will be suspended by the government on eight weekends from 22 July during the Olympics and Paralympics.

This is so irritating because I'm contracted to work on Sundays so instead of working 6 hours it'll go up to 9
    Anyone else annoyed by this?

    Think of the money.

IMO Sunday trading hours should be abolished, because I get that it's nice for retail workers to get a rest, but most shops hire students to cover Sundays.

This sounds great, I'd be in favour of this as a permanent change. It always annoys me that the shops close at 4, especially the supermarkets. I never remember that it's Sunday so I have the dissapointing empty handed trek home from time to time.

It's brilliant. Sunday trading laws are archaic and stupid. Always am so annoyed by forgetting the closing hours on Sundays and finding all the shops closed!

There's no logical reason to keep the law that I can see. It just inconveniences so many people and for what? Nothing! It actually hurts the economy. If people don't want to work Sundays they don't have to!

When I was working Sundays back several years ago I would have welcomed the opportunity to work longer for more money.

It's win-win if we ditch them.

I certainly hope the hours are abolished nationwide after the Olympics. I work in a shop on Sundays and would love to earn some more money that day.

If we get rid of them it might be a step, albeit a small one, in the direction of repairing our economy

If Sunday was put into 'normal' working hours then surely the extra pay for it not being 'normal' working hours would cease?

Can't have it two ways peeps!

I actually want it to stay at Sunday trading hours. Religion may be getting lost in the UK, but people still consider Sunday to be a rest day.

    There's a reason why I disagree.

At the place I work Sunday "is" a rest day, the hours are only 11-5, and all the normal full time staff take the day off(They also get one other day off during the week, on a rotational system) and are replaced by a team of students.

These are students that would be unemployed otherwise.

I'm torn, it's sort of nice having a recognised day of rest, on the other hand it IS kinda piss-annoying to find shops closed.

There's countries where you can hit a corner shop/supermarket almost all hours of every day, BLISS!

Always did find it weird that shops tend to close around the time most people are getting off of work and able to you know, shop.

Abolishing Sunday trading hours is one of the most obviously beneficial policies out there. It has no major weaknesses, but it has major strengths.

An extra 3 hours is nothing, if it's busy time will fly by.

I've just been informed of this, from this sunday we're opening 9-6. That's great, I usually work 8-6 on a sunday anyway! People that are saying its not fair on workers need to remember that just because a shop isn't trading, it doesnt mean that people aren't in there working. Although I dont get extra pay on a sunday, which isn't so great

Good for the economy and workers who need to earn extra cash, bad for families (as one or both parents may be required to work late on Sunday and thus be unable to spend time with their children).

lol. Try living in Germany where almost nothing opens on Sundays at all. If there's one thing I miss about Britain itself, it's being able to buy stuff on a Sunday.

Have they given you notice that you will be required to work these extra hours? Have you got a set x hour contract?
