This advice has honestly been so helpful so far! my options so far are as followed:
    English
    Maths
    Triple Science
    Spanish
    P.E
    Philosophy & Ethics
    I.C.T
And hopefully a few BTECS in aviation studies that I could possibly gain outside school because I am an air cadet. Year 9 has been a tad challenging so far started our B1 course a year early and rushed it from January/February for the June exam and just completed my first ISA and I.CT.T exam so anticipating good results! I'm actually thoroughly looking forward to year 10 so I can actually put effort into my lessons instead of having to do homework and effort for other pointless subjects to me .

    Hello all!

I don't expect there to be a lot of Year 9s, but if there are, would you like to discuss your thoughts on joining year 10? What do you expect, what options have you taken and are you feeling nervous?

I'm also thinking of creating a year 10 thread when we join, if anyone else hasn't already and when the current year 10 thread changes to year 11 if that's ok with them.

    My options: (4)

    Triple science (2)
    History (1)
    French (1)
There is hardly any jump, maybe some extra homework, don't wory about it, but work as hard as you can

French sucks Oh and if you're doing History, you can't slack off and cram it in the day before the exam. Make sure you're well prepared for your GCSEs.

Just finished my GCSE's...only tip I would say is keep on top of your work..year 10 flies by and year 11 goes even quicker!
Oh, and for any students doing art GCSE, KEEP GOING! I cannot stress this enough, art gcse is about both quality and quantity, so the more you have the better your grade.

Re: Year 9s Going Into Year 10 - Expectations
My advice for Year 9's going on into Year 10:

Firstly, DON'T feel inclined to take too many subjects! I did this, saying I would have 17GCSE's but realised it was highly unrealistic and am back down to 12, which is still quite a lot. Just remember, you only really need about 9/10 GCSE's. And btw, its about quality, not quantity, your better off getting 5A*s and 7A's rather than getting 1A*, 2As, 3B's, 4C's and 2Ds - right?

Secondly, choose your friends wisely. There will be a lot of uneccessary people along the way, which you're better off staying clear of. Or you'll end up like me last year, trying to sort out friendship problems instead of turning up to a double period of Triple Science.

Thirdly, don't judge your teachers. They want whats best for you, although some of them have a funny way of showing it. Just accept that you might not like them, but you will have to learn off them, so swallow your pride and get over yourselves.

Also, buy textbooks & revision guides that cant be obtained from school. Already this year Ive spend about £70 on textbooks, but it cant be helped. :/

Do as much work in class as possible, it will reduce the amount of homework you need to take home.

Dont be afraid to ask people for help! As exam time draws close, being shy wont help you get the A*s you're capable of!

Sleep, eat and breathe. Take each day as it comes, and you'll be fine. Feel free to private message me

Good luck. It's not that hard, provided you actually work, so don't feel too daunted. Keep yourself organised. I'd also recommend revision books (especially for subjects you don't like/ have awful teachers in them). I revised solely from them for my first science (which I am awful at, hate and have bad teachers for) exams and did OK.
Don't worry about it, it goes incredibly quickly

I'm not sure that you'll find a lot of other year 9's here though

    Triple science (2)
    History (1)
    French (1)
I didn't take history for GCSE but I did take French and triple science as well as statistics and business studies.

In French I didn't even know the verbs when I started in year 10 because I'd been in the bottom group for 2 years (mixed in year 7) and basically just knew how to say hello and ask things like 'what is your name?' 'what is the time?' etc. lol pretty bad.. I didn't really do that much work and I got a D which was my lowest grade but it just shows how hard it is to get an F or worse in something. I found the listening exam the most difficult and I think most of my friends said the same so thats probably the bit that needs the most practice. In the oral bit you basically just need to put together some basic phrases.

Triple science isn't that difficult either. I got a C in chemistry without knowing how to balance a formula lol My college lecturer didn't really understand that but I guess you only need 60% for a C so I just learnt the other stuff and avoided the formulae bits. Biology is just a case of reading the textbook and revising by answering the summary questions.

At one point we didn't have a teacher for Biology and the covers were a bit useless so I got a D in the exam for that module, I chose to resit it and the day before the re-sit I took the day off and read that whole section of the textbook, answering all of the summary questions and I got an A* in the exam the next day.

For English I didn't really understand what the teachers meant by revision to be honest. You need to learn things like paragraph formation when doing essays and how to analyse a poem using words like juxtaposition. For me the best thing that I did to boost my grade in English was by reading PETA articles about the fur industry and getting passionate about it. In one of the exams I had to write an article and I thought the examiners are probably sick to death of reading about global warming and poverty so I wrote about the fur industry. I'm pretty sure whatever I got in that massively boosted my grades so basically yeah.. find a topic you feel angry and passionate about and learn some facts about it.

I don't remember there being much of a difference between year 9 and year 10. GCSEs aren't particularly difficult and it sounds like you're a good student so I don't think you need to worry, just pick up some exam techniques and make sure you don't leave revision to the night before!

I'm about to go into year 10 I'm nervous and excited all at the same time I have chosen to do
    ICT BTEC
    ICT BTEC 1ST DIPLOMA
    HISTORY
    MEDIA STUDIES

The only subjects I'm really dreading are Maths and Science cause I am hopeless at both of these subjects I have just finshed 25% of my Science GCSE and messed up completely so I am rather scared I'm gonna mess up the rest of my science GCSE and mess up my Maths GCSE

Keep ontop of the homework, ask for help if you need it, don't spend all of your time working, remember to socialise and have fun.

These 2 years will flash by, it only seems yesterday that I was thinking how far prom away was (1.5years) and why were all the girls worrying about it. You will mature so much in that time and by the end you will hardly recognise yourself.

Aslong as you are sensible then you will have no problems with the workload.

My God this thread is depressing. I know you want to do well but they're only GCSEs and you've not even begun Year 10. It's way too early for all of this.

Wow, hypocrite - you're the one who was rimming these threads when you were fourteen, yet you're still hurt about your shortcomings when you were at GCSE level so you vent your anger at these kids...

Erm, no. I must have joined TSR February of Year 11. I quickly found whatever the GCSE Revision Thread was that year and, ignorant of the simplicity and insignificance of GCSEs, I felt compelled over-revise for those exams. I regret the day I opened that topic because it got me worked up about the exams for no good reason.

Sure, I ended up with some good results but it was a total waste of time. Throughout my A Level years, I never revised that much again and I met/exceeded the grades I needed.

The reason I made the post is that I dread to think that someone in Year 10 is *already* starting to go through what I (unnecessarily) put myself through from March of Year 11. There is no need to buy all the textbooks if you aren't told to by your school, forgo any part of your social life* or most of the stuff you've been "advised" to do here.

    * like this bs for example: "Secondly, choose your friends wisely. There will be a lot of uneccessary people along the way, which you're better off staying clear of. Or you'll end up like me last year, trying to sort out friendship problems instead of turning up to a double period of Triple Science. " Believe it or not you do not need to get rid of any of your friends to succeed in your GCSEs. In any case, missing two lessons of one subject will have next to no effect on your final grades and any friendships that you do have are more important than the impact missing those lessons would have (I hope).

I personally do not see a problem with preparing yourself for the future. That fact that we are concerned clearly shows that we are taking our education seriously.
Us getting to know eachother before starting in September will allow us to create a connection and probably study together in the future.
This thread is more than just being worried.

I love History ^_^ Where do you want to teach? Primary? Secondary? College?
I would like to go to either Dental school or Medical school. I'm torn between the two. Doctor or Dentist? Idk. ><
