I am doing so at the moment, it helps but it feels a bit emotional nevertheless.

    How many people do this?

If it helps you, that's great (: it'll allow you to record your life, to analyse your experiences, learn from them and look back on them.

I used to but I'd never stick to it, I'd stop after a couple of days >.<

I write poems occasionally about strong emotional experiences. If something powerful happens, or I make a discovery, over a period of time (a few minutes or more) I write prose.

I have written a story aimed at children going through a beareavement of a younger sibling based on personal experience, one day I'd love to see it published to help kids going through that but I need to find it and edit it first

No not really. I might use something from a personal experience in a story, but it will never take a central role and will only be from inspiration and then reworked heavily.

I definitely use my experiences, but I never make the character I'm writing about into myself, if that makes sense? So even though I do get a bit emotional about it, I'm sort of detached from it all still.
