Work experience at IBM: what to wear?
The dress code is 'smart', not 'smart casual'. I don't have any smart clothes and it is for 5 days and I obviously don't want to wear the same thing every day. I'm a girl by the way.
Any suggestions since it's a little vague for me?

You could purchase a black pencil skirt, and a couple of different coloured blouses.

Where would you suggest I could buy affordable blouses?

I'm not well off and I landed work experience in courts where it was also smart casual and I instantly panicked because I own no blouses etc.

Then one day I was in Asda with my mum and spotted like loads of work clothes in George! I bought two pencil skirts and a few blouses and they were sooo cheap! Yet when I was there some posh girls who were wearing expensive clothes complimented them cause they looked good. I'd never bought clothes in Asda before but they were perfect!

When I worked there, I often went in with an open-collared shirt, dark trousers and black shoes. Depends if you're doing any client interaction or not, whenever we had meetings I went in a full suit.

Blouses with pencil skirt would probably work. Try Marks & Spencer or somewhere like BHS. They're not exactly uncommon.

I'm about 5''1 - really short. Would that outfit still work, plus I look younger than my age (16).
Also would blazer, top underneath + skirt work or would that not be smart enough..

I can only judge with my sister, who's 5"4 and manages to pull it off.

It's probably better to go slightly more formal on your first day and find out what everyone else is wearing .

    What are you interning as?

Haha well it's not really clear as our school has offered placements for students in our year and we got given a timetable, which is vague. We're shadowing people and doing conference calls etc. but nothing is clear

Hmm. Do you want to work in IBM eventually, or do something tech-y? I can't imagine conference calls happening terribly often in software or tech, but chucking an intern into business consulting seems a bit deep .

Well I haven't decided completely but tech-y is one of my options but my career choice is certainly not restricted to IBM.
I'd imagine that they would give us guidance since we're only Year 11 though...

Indeed, IBM are a pretty good company to work for. Let me know if you want any guidance later on in terms of how to get into the industry as whole - I used to be the CS student ambassador rep at uni.
