Need recommendations for truly scary films.

Whether you think cinema died with Hitchcock or only got good once Michael Bay started blowing up helicopters, this is the place where moving pictures are discussed.

As the title states, I'd really appreciate any recommendations of films you've found truly terrifying.

I love horror, but I must admit that it is a genre with few impressive titles (for me, at least). Here are some films I've found scary, so you know what sort of horror excites me:

    1. (Incidentally my favourite film of all time, of all genres) Rosemary's Baby
    2. Orphan
    3. The Shining
    4. The Haunting
    5. Carrie
    6. Angelheart

(Before anyone recommends The Exorcist, though, I have seen it and thought it was terrible :P)

Essentially, I like films that are chilling, creepy and bizarre, more so than films like Halloween etc. If you know any films, modern or old, that are scary in the same way as the above listed, then please let me know

    Cheers.
If it hasnt been said already `Quarantine` is a brilliant `scare` movie...

im more into the brutal gore than the scare, so Hostel/Saw are my sort of movies.

Haha i was just going to put the exorcist but i read your post twice. Try on the panaroma activity films. One of the films arn't that scary that all but i think its the first one that is really terrifying. I would maybe check out the classics such as Alfred Hitchcocks(sp?) "psycho" and "The 6th cents". Other films such as "The Ring" are also pretty good.

However many years on, I still don't understand why people found Paranormal Activity scary...Literally one of the most boring films I have EVER seen.

I'd agree with you on Hitchcock though For me personally OP, the best era for horror films was around the 70s- original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Amytiville Horror etc, so I'd say pick one of the horrors from that period.

I 100% agree. The 60s, 70s and even the 80s were the golden decades for horror. After that, predictable, mindless, poorly made slashers became the norm. Rosemary's Baby, for me, epitomises what horror should be.

El habitacion del nino (The Baby's Room)

One of the only films to actually make me feel absolutely terrified at the end. Trust me, watch it mate.

I found The Thing to be quite frightening because of the nature of the situation - the "thing" is an alien creature which completely resembles its victims, so characters are completely unaware of anyone who might be the thing.

The film also has some of the most memorable/disturbing gore scenes

Audition is really messed up. Also the suicide club it's not aaaagh scary but for hours after wards your like startled by the film, most ****ed up film I've ever seen and will leave you questioning yourself wondering "am i connected to myself?"

    Both the above are japanese.

English films, I would recommend Rec and rec:2 also insidious. Neither are that scary but are good films.

You've probably got all the recommendations you need by now but here are some more suggestions

Jeepers Creepers (1&2) - I think the first is the best but the sequel is equally scary
The Others - Suppose its more of a psychological thriller than a 'horror' but again, its very chilling with a fantastic story
The Grudge - Never fails to get a few scares
    Alien - Classic
Wrong Turn - Usually don't like gory films but this one was brilliant
Creep - Genuinely petrified of the underground after watching this one
