Academic/Extra-curricular activities balance?
Hi guys,
As you may (or may not!) know, a large proportion of top law firms specify that they want candidates with a "good 2:1 degree or above". But if you have a lot of extra activities on your CV (e.g. Committee positions, mooting, volunteering, work experience etc.), would that help balance out a slightly lower 2:1? I'm not yet in this position, more thinking about it hypothetically!
I know this would probably work on an ad hoc basis, but if anyone has past experience in this area, or general opinions, comment on this thread
Thanks -
Re: Academic/Extra-curricular activities balance?
Fingers crossed you'll get a good 2:1 and also have the extra-curricular activities so you won't be in this situation but generally I would say good extra-curricular activities will help to combat a slightly lower 2:1.
When I went on an international workshop with Freshfields they kept saying how much they look at things holistically and if one area mitigates another they will still consider that candidate. I know this could be merely graduate recruitment mantra but judging from some of the candidates I know they have an interviewed I think it is the truth. I also know someone who got a DLA TC even though they got a 2:2 average for both first and second year.
Therefore, I would be inclined to say that extra-curricular activities will balance out a lower grade. It obviously all depends on the exact situation of that particular candidate though.
