How Do I Motivate Myself?
I realize, looking back on my life, that I was much more motivated as a teenager than I am now. I'm only 23, but seeing my friends getting jobs and acquiring graduate degrees, I feel that I should be at their level, if not higher.
Right now I'm getting a master's degree and will be finishing in a few months, so I will have to start looking for a job. But somehow I just don't feel motivated to further develop my skills, or be looking for a job, or be working on something else. All I feel like doing is reading or watching movies, and even as I finish my dissertation I feel that it takes a lot of energy for me to do any amounts of writing. I know eventually I'll get the job done, but I wish I was as motivated as my classmates to do more writing.
I look at my boyfriend and he is barely a year younger than me, but already he's super-motivated to look for jobs, he got into grad school, volunteers, and is still motivated to try to do more. As a result, I feel that I am lacking something mentally that I wish I had, and somehow I get the feeling that I am not smart enough or good enough. Seeing all my friends getting jobs and doing things to add to their resume, I feel I have fallen behind and it seems like too much effort to try to match their levels.
How do I get myself motivated again? -
This is how I deal with motivating myself, bare in mind this works for me, but everyone is different!
Firstly, don't compare yourself with others. Granted, this is so much easier said than done, but it's true. The more you compare yourself to others, the more you'll find wrong with your own life. Everyone is different!
Secondly, the more you demote yourself, the more demoted you will become. Sounds obvious, right?
You need to think positively, think in a positive way to have a positive day!
Thirdly, Motivation is often created through enthusiasm, enthusiasm is often created through happiness. Many people I know are not motivated, because they aren't happy.
I dont know if this is the case for you... But, nevertheless, here are some tips to stay happy:
1. Smile
2. Work out
3. Drink plenty of water (10 cups a day)
4. Stray away from gossip, bad mouthing, bitching etc
and 5. Cold showers!
These have all been proven to improve a persons happiness

Re: How Do I Motivate Myself?
Definitely agree with the comparing and enthusiasm points above. Especially the comparison one as it seems to be most prominent from your post.
I read this once on a list of things to live a better life and I still remember it clear as daylight (a fair achievement for me really) - Don't compare yourself to others. You know nothing about their journey.
Likewise, your journey is different too.
Do you enjoy your subject? I spent most of my time reading and watching movies too when I had little enthusiasm the past year, when I didn't know what to do study and thus continuously felt like I was wasting my time and getting further and further away from doing what I should've been doing - applying to uni etc. Eventually I resigned myself to not going to uni, and have a much better idea as to what I wish to do and generally feel a lot more energy now. Possibly related to yourself? -
Re: How Do I Motivate Myself?
Try and set yourself a goal, a big one. What do you want to achieve, be or own in life? If only your degree will enable you to get there, then if you want to ever reach that goal, you're going to have to succeed and graduate.
Setting a goal and realising there's only one way to achieve it, is what motivates me. At the moment, my goal is to be able to get in to a good university and this really motivated me to revise for my final GCSEs - I'd never revised like it before, until I set myself this goal which I wish I'd set earlier. Try it.
