First Year Results & Final Degree Result
I was just wondering how people's first year results compared to their final degree outcome?

I'm currently reading History, and averaged 65% over the eight modules I took this year. The highest average in my year was 68% (because of the number of modules we have to take) I'm aiming for a first overall at the end of my degree.

I'm told that you can expect to improve considerably upon first year results in second and third year. Is this true?

I'd be very interested to hear what people got in their first year marks, and at the end of their degree. Particularly in History or other Arts subjects

1st year results don't count towards your final classification. If you can maintain that average (65%) in your 2nd year and average 70+ in your 3rd you'll be in line for a 1st.

    70+ = 1st
    60-69 = 2:1
    50-59 = 2:2
    below 50 = 3rd

    Good Luck !!

    Thanks

I know first year doesn't 'count' as such, but I'm hoping to apply to Cambridge for an MPhil after my BA and they demand a full degree transcript so would see my first year grades. I put in a fair bit of effort to ensure I didn't get any 2.2s this year

I was just interested to see if anyone had pulled themselves up from 65 in first year, to an overall first at the end of third year - see if it's possible or common so to speak

    1st year: 63
    2nd year: 66
3rd year: graduated with a 1st, by the skin of my teeth!

BSc. Psychology so I'm not sure how applicable that is to you.

    1st year: 61
    2nd year: 58
    3rd year: 64

Had a major wobble in 2nd year but managed to pull myself together to get my 2:1.

Wow, well done! Quite the pull up at the end there!

 Thanks! I found out early June and I'm still clicking back on the results page every now and then to see if they've changed it to a 2:1 :mmm:

In any case it's certainly possible to come out with a first!

...The look on my mother's face when I found out... The look on MY face!

In fact I'd love to know what my lecturers think of it all, considering I had major dissertations problems and was the last person in the year to begin collecting data, they were all despairing with me by the end. How I got 72% in that I do not know, but had it been 71% then let's just say I wouldn't be replying to this thread.

Haha good luck with your 2nd and 3rd years!

I don't have my final grades for 2 modules yet, but with the 4 I do, I am averaging 69.8%! I know the two other modules will bring that average down a lot, as I did pretty poorly in both exams!

Mine don't correlate well at all. I was just about a 2.2 in first year, and (providing they don't change too much with moderation, or just change upwards, or a downwards change is matched by an upwards one) I've got a comfortable/high 2.1 overall. Possibly a 1st (I haven't sat down to work it out yet; I don't think it is - some of the modules are high, but others will bring them down.)

I've just spent a good five minutes watching your giant smilies popping in and out of view.

    Mildly freaked by them

I got 65 overall for my first year, 70 for my second averaged and 75 average for third year. I managed to get a mst offer from Oxford and masters funding with an offer from York so your grades aren't going to hinder you - and I'm nowhere near the most intelligent in my year!

Edit: to add I did english and tha my first year did count

Interesting thread OP, I'd be interested to see this too as I only just scraped a 2.1 in my first year (we don't get percentages, rather a grade aggregation scale. It works out that anything above 16 is a 2.1 and I was something like 16.67).

I'm tempted to apply to Scottish Unis for postgrad. When looking at Edinburgh's entry requirements, the different grading scale threw me off a little bit. I'd have thought the UK should have a uniform University grading system, but I suppose we're all different with GCSES, A Levels, Highers and Advanced Highers anyway...

Wow! That's really good, and very encouraging Well done on the offers from Oxford and York.

I also don't think I'm very intelligent, but I'm willing to work as hard as possible to get where I want to be

    1st Year: 50
    2nd Year: 52
    3rd Year: 67

Because of weightings (10-30-60), I was able to get a 2:1 (just)

Don't work hard. Work smart. Big difference - it's what pulled my grades up!

Oooh, do you have any advice for working smart at all? I try to read critically, and I skim and speed read etc, make notes on eveything I read etc...

    My averages were:

    67.75% in 1st Year
    63.75% in 2nd year
    73.33% in 3rd Year

So ended up being just over 70% overall. Its doable, but this might be due to the mathematical content of my course. For history I'm pretty sure it will be quite difficult.

It's easy to get used to, we get grades like A1-D3 and the grades just correspond to a scale (21 down to 10, but you also get some points for what they call a marginal, clear or bad fail) :yep:
