Birmingham City Uni or Portsmouth Uni
University course discussion for architecture, surveying, town planning, landscaping, etc.

Here is the league table for architecture http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/...e-architecture
Birmingham and Portsmouth are a few places of each other, but having seen Portsmouth first hand I would be biased to suggest Portsmouth. The city is very loveable with a beach, great place and people. State of the art facilities in the architecture department etc.
A degree is what you make of it, it doesn't matter too much what Uni you go to. I've heard Birmingham was good too so maybe just pick a name out of a hat?

Re: Birmingham City Uni or Portsmouth UniI wouldn't say Portsmouth is a that great a city tbh, don't get me wrong there are some nice parts like Gunwharf Quays, Southsea beach, the historic dockyard, but the city generally isn't amazing. Lots of high tower blocks, like with most cities there are rough areas and the crime rate is quite high I think too. But there are housing areas filled with students, so if you stick to this and avoid the dodgy areas you would be fine.(Original post by Gajanp1993)

I don't want to put you off, just giving you another perspective on the city. Although the uni is really nice, I know someone that does architecture and loves it, so I think you should base your decision mainly on that it's a good uni

Please don't pick a university out of the hat as somebody suggested, you need to select the one you wish to study at.(Original post by Diiana)
still have a hard time to decide which one
, but anyways thanks for the answers!
To find this out, examine the literature of the course structure and find out which topics are most appealing to you. You don't want to be studying topics you don't generally like, right? After this, compare the locations of the two universities, watch videos on YouTube or videos from their websites and find out which are suits you best. Check out student reviews and ratings, read their comments on their time at university, etc. Also, look at accommodation options and funding.
By examining these key areas I'm sure that you will find out which university will best suit your needs.
Good luck, whatever university you select, I'm sure you have a bright future ahead of you.

Re: Birmingham City Uni or Portsmouth Uni
Been to both on Architecture open days. I suggest that you also go to both on Architecture open days as nothing better than having feet on the ground and going with your gut I think. As above poster has said you don't want to be doing a lot of modules where you don't like what your doing. That said though a lot of Architecture courses tend to have similar modules because of RIBA criteria, i.e History of Architecture, basic Buidling materials, construction (techtonics) maybe a Visual Studies (Design & Communication) module - arty farty stuff, tacking bits of coloured paper together. I feel that many Architecture schools are still coming up short on there websites in giving enough info to prospective students, i.e most just list the modules they do but don't even give a one liner telling prospective students what it is all about. I mean Design & Communication could consist of quite technical drawing or arty farty stuff for Architecture courses it tends to be the later, it doesn't really tell the student anything to just list it, with techtonics how is the prospective student supposed to know what it is? Ok you could research more but it is making a hard task of it and if you get the wrong end of the stick you could be doing stuff you did'nt want to do.
Having been to both open days though I would say Portsmouth impressed more both the course and the city. Above person is right there are concrete tower block side to the city but Birmingham is no better, worse in fact I would say. Birmingham has basically got the Bullring shopping centre area and a old historic town hall area but neither of these are particularly worth going there for, Portsmouth has better scenic areas and shooping, i.e histoic dockyard, Gunwharf Quays etc. I was more impressed with the work they do at Portsmouth, I think Birmingham may have had new Dean since I visited on open day but don't know if its improved at all. Portmouth is generally known to be in higher demand for students to get in there and to be fair is better reputation is probably justified architecture league table or not. So, personally between the two I would go for Portsmouth. -
