Prepay meter for gas and electric
I'm set to move into a flat with my sister (tomorrow hopefully!) and having got the keys we have just found out gas and electric is on a prepay meter (was all a bit rushed, so probably didn't find out the important stuff like we should have...).

Have grasped how they basically work as figured out how to top up while we popped over to work out what needs doing, but any ideas how much we can expect to be topping it up? I've heard they're more expensive than normal meters.

Also, the guy in co-op told us you can only pay for top-ups on it in cash. a) is this the same everywhere? b) Why??? Can see it being a hassle if we need to top it up and at the same time have to find somewhere to get cash out.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

You're right - they are more expensive, and are often foisted upon people who keep getting into arrears with their bills. There's some info here

You could also try asking on this forum, which is full of people in the know http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...splay.php?f=13
