Re: iPad for uni?I got this. I'm sure you can get something bigger and more powerful for the price, but I needed something small that I could put in my bag and take to the lab and run Matlab and things like that. It hasn't disappointed me yet(Original post by kka25)
What did you get as a replacement?
My old laptop is almost 7 years old now!
Since I can't afford a new laptop, the Netbook is just a temporary replacement for the laptop - to be honest, I'm just waiting for the old laptop to die on me anytime now; I think it has served its purpose
I agree with you - thank God I didn't buy the iPad. It's just one big phone to me lol.
My desktop (which still works) is 9 years old, I think. It was my only computer until this year and if I wanted to make notes somewhere else, I'd have to copy my OneNote notebooks and my textbook PDFs (
) onto a flash drive to use on a different computer, which was okay, I guess.

Re: iPad for uni?Owh, I got it because I wanted something very small as a (temporary) replacement, and at the same time affordable. I got a good price for the Netbook so I bought it. I hate carrying the old laptop; it's quite bulky :/(Original post by + polarity -)

My desktop has a similar age!
It's still useful but it runs Windows XP with some outdated hardware specification lol.

Re: iPad for uni?I'm in the same position as you (except that I already have a netbook in addition to a decrepit old laptop which can't take the heat anymore).(Original post by Missyme22)
I'm considering saving up to buy an iPad. I already have a laptop (dell inspiron 1545) but after two years of student life it's beginning to wear and using it as a desktop instead to save having it out everywhere.
I found typing rather than writing my notes to be a big help as it was faster, and meant I could check back later to re-write/organise my notes.
I also have an iPod touch, although the battery life is going, so I understand apple software already and find it simple to use.
Should I go through with getting an iPad?
I'm going to buy an Ipad.
If you want to type on a keyboard and use an iPad, you can.
If you want to draw diagrams with it, you can.
If you want to put your textbooks on it, you can.
Also, at my university all lecture slides are available as pdf files (which can then be transferred onto the iPad and annotated with different apps/stylus).
I can see why many people have suggested just getting a netbook (as I already have one), but the allure of the iPad is having everything you need for work while at university at your fingertips (literally), while you can still use your old laptop for mmore typing intensive projects if you so wish.
Other apps on the iPad allow you to dicate notes and have them transcribed (although i'm unsure how well this works, especially in a Scot's accent), Have your own personal planner and mind map maker, and even listen to lectures from places like the Khan academy, all on the same, lightweight, high battery life product.
Hope this helps you

Re: iPad for uni? This one: Asus 1025 CE(Original post by + polarity -)
What netbook did you get? I wanted one since 2008, well, until I got this.
Windows 7 nikka
But I got myself the RAM 2GB version.
It's small and the battery life is quite good; I got it for £212 which is within my range

Re: iPad for uni?If they were the best curtains in the world, that would have been accepting. However they were yellow with pink swirls.....(Original post by kka25)

Re: iPad for uni?An iPad sounds like a good idea! If you need to do large amount of typing then you can use a Bluetooth keyboard. Plus, Apple make a bluetooth keyboard and a keyboard dock.(Original post by Missyme22)
Ok, thanks. I agree with you about it not replacing my laptop, but I hope to extend my laptop's life by leaving it at home and for doing the bigger documents and stuff. An iPad would be a great travel replacement (in my opinion.) I must admit when it comes to diagrams it's quicker just to draw them but I generally find typing notes themselves a lot easier. But thanks.
If that is not ideal, then you can also get cases with a built in keyboard, which may be more convenient.
And last...
If you are looking for portability, but need to type, Apple sell refurbished MacBook Airs for £600, which come with a warranty, as does a new MacBook. This has a full size keyboard, so would be prefect for extended typing.

Re: iPad for uni?
typing on screen is something that you can get used to for the purpose of note taking
I tend to use http://www.fluidtouch.biz/noteshelf/ and write with a capitative pen -
Re: iPad for uni? This, if you want to get a tablet without a physical keyboard.(Original post by theronkinator)
I've got a tablet, I hate typing on it, just much more difficult to type fast on a touch screen as you have to lok at it more. I used to use my netbook but then started making notes on paper instead as I found it better, then type them up when I got home as it helped me learn it more.
Another option I used occasionally was got a £8 mini bluetooth keyboard, paired it with my ipod touch (or tablet) and then just typed on the keyboard (it's hand sized so just did it under the desk. Although I still found paper notes and copying it up to be the best way.
Personally, I'd get a laptop rather than a tablet.

It's still useful but it runs Windows XP with some outdated hardware specification lol.
