David Starkey vs. Laurie Penny
So I've never actually started a thread but I felt I had to share this.

I cannot stand champagne socialists.
I hate deluded socialists, jumping on the bandwagon, whilst knowing nothing about the economy. -

screaming 'racist' or 'bigot' hysterically at someone really does not achieve a lot. -

She couldn't back it up and she did start it. -
Re: David Starkey vs. Laurie Penny
She just made a fool of herself to be honest, she accused a man of being a 'bigot' without backing it up without any evidence. Penny is one of those socialists who give them bad names, by screaming 'racist' at anyone who doesn't share her views.
If i was in Starkey's position i would of probably responded the same way, even though the manner he did it in can be seen as aggressive accusations of racism can damage someones credibility especially in the case of historians who's wealth is generated through being credible.
I wanted to see the discussion (or whatever it had turned into) proceed further, at least then Penny would have realized that its a bad move making unsubstantiated arguments against a historian. -
Re: David Starkey vs. Laurie Penny
She asked him a question and was being insulting. I would have been angry as well.
However, Starkey reacted like a child.
One person acting like a moron is not a justification for the other acting even more stupidly. It demeans the debate when it is reduced to people hurling insults and finger pointing.Last edited by DorianGrayism; 03-07-2012 at 15:37. -
Re: David Starkey vs. Laurie Penny
I used to like Starkey, until it turned out that he was vaguely racist. And I'm sorry to any feminists around but even more so I cannot stand Laurie Penny, at all. Yes, I know it's an ad hominem but I can't stand her general demeanour; I can't stand that she once put out a job advert offering less than minimum wage and specified in said advert that she wanted a woman for the job; I can't stand her pitiful defence of the Occupy protests; I can't stand her whole "I'm so socialist! Look, I even have red hair!" thing; I can't stand the "I haven't been so thrilled since daddy bought me my third polo-pony" joke she made; I can't stand that she argues against capitalism but credits private healthcare for saving her life and said about her private education, "I see it as my duty to use those chances to contribute to a debate about meaningful social issues, and not just run off and make lots of money in PR or investment banking." So she has a duty to be prominent in the media about social issues because of her wealthy upbringing? That's pretty much the same elite arrogance that people accuse Cameron and Osborne of, except because she's on the left she's meant to get away with it. She's a walking contradiction.
