Queen Mary to join Russell Group. How important?
How will this actually affect students? Some says The Russell Group is Ivy League for UK, is there some truth in this statement? Afaik, QMUL is generally around top 100 border in world rankings, will this membership carry it to a higher position in the long run?

For the university, maybe a bit. For students, not at all.

None whatsoever. The Russell Group is a lobbying group for large research universities.

May be for future applicants but not for the current students.

Unfortunately TSRians somehow think it's an exclusive list of the best universities, instead of being research intensive.

it doesn't really mean anything, and it's going to mean even less the more unis are added to it.

The thing is, a lot of schools round the country are urging pupils to join 'russel group unis' because it's successfully marketed itself as a quality brand, even though it's just a lobbying group of the largest universities. QMUL has seen which way the wind's blowing and hopped on the bandwagon.

The thing about bandwagons is that one should jump off before they become tumbrils!

The Russell Group has a supplier interest in promoting "facilitating" subjects at A level. It increases the supply of eligible candidates for them who, if they do not succeed in gaining entry are likely to be behind those who pursued a more vocational study path.

The Russell Group also has a supplier interest in promoting academic non-vocational degrees because that is what they sell and because they also sell the "accessories"; vocational masters degrees.

This will be the next misselling scandal.

when i was applying to uni the 'russell group' meant absolutely nothing to me. and even less the more they add to it. completely pointless imo.

The Ivy League is an athletics conference. The Russell Group is a lobbying group of large research intensive universities. They are not comparable beyond the fact that both, though they contain some of each respective country's leading/most prestigious universities, they are not an exhaustive list of prestigious universities nor are the intended to be an exhaustive list.

There was an article in the Times Higher Education a fortnight ago (I think) which suggested that a graduate premium was essentially misselling too (i.e. graduates make x amount more over their lifetime than non-graduates). You are right about about the promotion of non-vocational degrees. The job market simply cannot soak up all these 'talented' graduates in nondescript graduate jobs and schemes.

Oh entirely and I expect there to be more than a few disgruntled students this autumn.

Let's get it right - the Ivy League is an athletic conference comprising eight private institutions of higher education in the Northeastern United States. Not necessarily a measure of academic quality.

It was announced back in March/April that it would be joining the Russell Group. However, it doesn't actually join until later this summer.

It is important for national recognition. It has been an underrated university for a long time because its Mile End location which in turn affected its position in the league tables as applicants with higher UCAS points went elsewhere.

Well there's that and the fact that QMUL used to deliberately offer places to those with a lower UCAS score than they probably could have recruited, due to the ethos of the university. However I think that'll probably change in the future what with the Russell Group membership now and the number of courses that are at AAB and AAA now, that were at BBB when I started QMUL.

It's pretty important. It means the University is growing up and gaining some recognition and a higher budget. Not very important for undergrads, I guess, but postgrads will see the improvements before long.
