Particles inclined on a plane M1

Could anyone talk me through the yellow highlighted part? How did they get the force acting against the particle, I thought F_max acted against the particle.

The yellow highlighted part is the friction force, since friction is always a resistive force it acts against the resultant force and you use the equation F=μR where R is the reaction force provided by the surface (as the book does not move up or down on the plane the reaction force is equal to mgcos20 which equals 2gcos20).
