    Final Year Dissertation / Project
    Hey guys,

I'm currently on a paid year-long placement and will be returning to my final year of undergraduate study in September, meaning that by mid-September I will have to choose a topic and title for my project.

My target award is BSc (Hons) IT & Multimedia Computing and, although I got mean grades of 71% and 72% in my first and second years I'm not sure that I'm technical enough at the minute to choose a project that would require a high level of technical ability. I've had some experience in Visual Basic and MySQL but not really any other programming languages.

As far as I'm aware I'm allowed to choose between three routes: Research, Web Development and Software Development - though I have been told by a couple of lecturers that I should be taking one of the latter as it will give me better skills than research.

I know a few people will be working on projects involving the placement that they completed, but my placement isnt' very technical - it's more of a 'support' role training and supporting staff in their use of systems and dealing with any problems that arise as a result.

    A few questions on this:

    (1) Does anybody have any ideas on the types of project that could be technical enough to give me a good heading and start in programming/web development, but nothing that will blow my mind out of the waters, and be suitable for a BSc (Hons) dissertation?

    (2) If I were to consider learning web development (HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL etc) then would it be a problem that I'm not very good at design? I just don't seem to have an eye for design, so God knows why I took a degree that involved multimedia computing as an element.

    (3) Are there any particular languages/tools people would recommend that are suitable for a beginner to learn from the beginning and still be able to do a dissertation or project in?

I'm meeting a tutor to discuss this in further detail this week but any advice would be very much appreciated - I don't want to go back in September and choose something that I won't be able to do; likewise I don't want to choose something that I will regret as being 'too easy' or not very good for my CV.

    Cheers,

    Tom!

Also, if anybody had any semi research/technical ideas or just research ideas in Computing then that would still be appreciated.
