Re: Do you think everyone starts of thinking they want to study medicine
I think to alot of parents, medicine represents the top of academia, thus they would tell their children about the wonders of being doctor so they would work hard and get good grades, I'd say therefore alot of people had medicine as their first idea. (yes, from a medical student)

Re: Do you think everyone starts of thinking they want to study medicine
It depends on your upbringing mostly. From my experience I can say that 'becoming a doctor' is something which catches on amongst people; when I first went to college no one, and I mean no one, wanted to be a doctor. As soon as I mentioned that I wanted to apply to medicine people suddenly started saying the same thing even though none of them had even given it a moments thought before. I think it has to do with a sense of 'you mean I could actually become a [insert prestigious/difficult/high salaried profession]?' which catches a persons interest if they have no other career ambitions. By the end of the course none of them wanted to be doctors and as far as I know the majority of them didn't move up to the next year of the course.

Re: Do you think everyone starts of thinking they want to study medicine
i did Biology, Chemistry, Maths A-Levels and was dead set against doing Medicine.
I'm starting a Biology degree in October and it's only now (having been working in a hospital all summer) that I realise I might want to do medicine. but i want to follow my interests first anyway.
i would say most science students in my school didn't want to do medicine - engineering and straight science degrees are very popular in my school, so that's what most people did. with also a fair few optometry/dentistry.
