Studying was done independently (i.e. no tutor/class etc)...and he sat the exam as an external candidate...some colleges allow this

It's quite possible to learn the content in a year and do well. Certain exam boards, however, require a coursework element and if you are an external student you will have to find a centre that will host you for the coursework element.

I've learned not to discount what a focused mature student can do if they put their mind to it. I've also seen that trying to juggle a tough course with a high workload job and minimal teacher support in learning doesn't always end well either.

Put it this way, my students get on average 9hrs of chemistry lessons a fortnight and should be doing at least half that again in self study, call that 15hrs a week. From start of AS through to the end of the exams (about 30 school weeks) that makes around 230hrs of work, not including revision for exams. Call it 500hrs for the full A-level.

Assuming you start in September and sit the entire of AS in January, you've got around 20 weeks including the holiday, assume you finish the course 2 weeks before the exam to allow revision time that's around 13 hours a week of work, every week.

Obviously that assumes private study time is as effective as directed study time in a class environment (sometimes it might be, other times i would suggest not) and doesn't include time for coursework which would have to be done at a center. Doesn't sound impossible, just it will be a LOT of work, consistently over a long period of time.

If you fancy it, go for it. If the pace is too high you can always slow it down and do it over 2 years.
