    Bicep curls
    I just can't do them!

I used to be able to curl 10kg, 12.5kg if pushing myself but now I can't do more than 4kg on my left arm after not going the gym for about 6 months. I don't feel it in the actual muscle and think it may be something to do with the joint. This also means I can't do more than 4kg on my right or else it will become unbalanced!

I just can't flex my left arm when trying to do them

Does anyone have/ had a similar problem or know what I can do?

I feel a right knob in there curling 4kg's and I don't think it's even doing anything for my biceps.

    Cheers

I know i am going to be in your situation a little because of a broken forearm

All i am going to do is start low weights and build it up slowly, keep at it and soon you will be up there again

It may sound bad now because its a 6kg drop but you have been out for some time it really is not as bad as you think

I have the same sort of problem if you mean that because of your elbow you can't do the curls that your muscles can? (If that makes sense)
Could be an issue with cartilage - see a doctor. That's what I keep meaning to do :P

Yeah that's it! I though it may be something to do with tendons or something.

I'm gonna stick with low weights for a week or so see if i can increase it but if not I will try and see a doctor! Let me know if you do

well considering you should only be doing curls once a week you arent going to increase in that time. unless you intend to curl erry day, which is more than likely how you've injured yourself.

I'm pretty sure I injured it stupidly trying to curl more than I could.
Lower weights, higher reps is the key. I went from 10x12.5kg (which was tough going and usually messed with my form even though I stupidly continued) to 15x8kg. The problem has mostly subsided for me now after doing that, hence why I've not been to see the doc.

I would go and see the doctor as you have to have injured yourself somewhat to only be able to curl 4kg.

Hopefully it is some sort of niggle that will go away.

    Must be an injury.

If you want to increase strength quickly in your arms, put the dumbbells down and do compound exercises, e.g. barbell curls and pull ups.

lmfao yup, using a barbell instead of a dumbell makes it a compound exercise.

if i wasnt on 10 warning points i would do my best to hurt your feelings.

Look at this bad man! Please don't hurt my feelings?

Compound = 2+ muscles, so you could say pretty much any exercise is compound, just to different degrees, if you want to get pedantic. Dumbbell curls are usually done more as isolation than compound.
Though you're right, I can see where Sconter is coming from.

Most people assume compounds to consist of only the: deadlift, squat and pull-up. All of which work a majority of the mucles in the body.

However, they are the three main compound excersises, which I beleive would work your biceps a lot more than curling.

They are not the only compound movements, though I agree they are the main.

Please tell me how squats and deadlifts work your biceps more than standing barbell curls? They are obviously an essential part of your workout (for back and legs), but you are talking nonsense.

    lol.

Compound exercises work several muscle groups at once, and include movement around two or more joints.

stop making up your own definitions.

hes not right, by his definition simultaneous dumbell curls would be a compound exercise.

I seldom do a bicep workout where I hit my biceps directly with curls, I find it much more effective doing a back workout (which also hits the biceps pretty hard.) I then finish off the session by perhaps doing a set of concentration curls and pull-ups. Anybody who knows anything about bodybuilding will tell you that directly hitting the biceps everyweek can potentially have a backward effect on gains, and result in overtraining (obviously a few bi excersises are fine.) Biceps are so small, you seriously do not need to dedicate a whole session to them, thus hitting them with compounds like deadlifts are effective. I am not talking nonsense at all, I am not saying that curling is ineffective. I am just stating that it doesn't deserve the merit which deadlifts and pull-ups deserve when considering bicep workouts.

Consensus definition for compound lifts is one that uses more than one joint. Simples.

That sounds awful and it's definitely not a muscle issue.

    Dude, see a doctor.
